I am writing a new web page, and I am stuck In the navbar specify the responsive part...
when I zoom out the web page, the dropdown menu does not align itself with the parent link
Is that normal? I tried to use rem and percentage units in the left CSS property for the dropdown ul but that didn't work,, Is there a way to fix it or I have to put the navbar into a container and center it?
my code:
* {
box-sizing: border-box

nav {
display: grid;
grid-template-columns: 5rem 1fr;

To position your dropdown menu you should add a position relative to is parent li. You are positioning the dropdown absolutely in relation to your .menu
.menu > li:nth-of-type(4) {
position: relative;
}

The "spotify" and "apple music" block elements display in one line next to each other as opposed to below each other.
I also use bootstrap on the page. Not sure if it's got anything to do with the issue because when I remove the script it still works the same.
Sorry if my code is hard to see through.
It's the inline-block on ul li in your CSS. inline-block won't break the line. See MDN Inline Elements.

I really recommend to look at bootstrap's drop down menu. It is easy to use and most things are already done for you. good luck

I tried to make a dropdown submenu (in this case 'Products') which has the same width as the mainmenu. The hover/active background colour should cover the entire width of the menu. It seems to be confined to stay within the above laying table.
Is there a way to expand towards the borders as well?
html,
body {
font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
}
.mainmenu li:hover .submenu {
display: inherit;
max-height: 200px;
line-height: 25px;
}
.submenu {
overflow: hidden;
max-height: 0;
width: 100%;
-webkit-transition: all 0.5s ease-out;
}
.easyflexMenu {

I've made the CSS a little bit smaller and in this example you have a fix height of the submenu.
You could use jQuery's animate to solve it without a fix height of the submenu
.navigation ul {
display: inline-block;
margin: 0px;
padding: 0px;
list-style: none;
font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
font-size: 11px;
}
.navigation ul > li {
display: block;
margin: 0px;
padding: 0px;
width: 170px;
min-height: 65px;
line-height: 65px;
}
.navigation ul > li a {
display: block;
height: 100%;
padding: 0px 15px;
line-height: inherit;
text-decoration: none;
color: #fff;
background-color: #229dfc;
}
.navigation ul > li a:active,
.navigation ul > li a:hover {
background-color: #114e7e;
}
.navigation ul > li .submenu {
display: inherit;
height: 0px;
overflow: hidden;
-webkit-transition: all 500ms ease-out;
transition: all 500ms ease-out;
}
.navigation ul > li a:active + .submenu,
.navigation ul > li a:hover + .submenu,
.navigation ul > li .submenu:active,
.navigation ul > li .submenu:hover {
height: 195px;
}
<div id="efmainmenu" class="easyflexMenu">
<nav class="navigation">
<ul class="mainmenu">
<li class="home">Home</li>
<li class="about">About</li>
<li class="products">Products
<ul class="submenu">
<li>Tops</li>
<li>Bottoms</li>
<li>Footwear</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li class="contact">Contact us</li>
</ul>
</nav>
</div>
Update: Elements below .submenu should not jump
Just add a position: absolute and z-index: 50 to the .navigation ul > li .submenu like this example
.navigation ul {
display: inline-block;
margin: 0px;
padding: 0px;
list-style: none;
font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
font-size: 11px;
}
.navigation ul > li {
position: relative;
display: block;
margin: 0px;
padding: 0px;
width: 170px;
min-height: 65px;
line-height: 65px;
}
.navigation ul > li a {
display: block;
height: 100%;
padding: 0px 15px;
line-height: inherit;
text-decoration: none;
color: #fff;
background-color: #229dfc;
}
.navigation ul > li a:active,
.navigation ul > li a:hover {
background-color: #114e7e;
}
.navigation ul > li .submenu {
position: absolute;
display: inherit;
height: 0px;
overflow: hidden;
-webkit-transition: all 500ms ease-out;
transition: all 500ms ease-out;
z-index: 50;
}
.navigation ul > li a:active + .submenu,
.navigation ul > li a:hover + .submenu,
.navigation ul > li .submenu:active,
.navigation ul > li .submenu:hover {
height: 195px;
}
<div id="efmainmenu" class="easyflexMenu">
<nav class="navigation">
<ul class="mainmenu">
<li class="home">Home</li>
<li class="about">About</li>
<li class="products">Products
<ul class="submenu">
<li>Tops</li>
<li>Bottoms</li>
<li>Footwear</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li class="contact">Contact us</li>

The simple solution should be to make the UI as responsive as possible by ignoring the use of properties such as negative margin, fixed width until and unless required without no way around.
Also always reset default CSS margin and padding for every element in the beginning which is helpful to remove the white space around the elements and around the page.
I have modified your CSS a bit. If you still think it requires more width or space, try adding padding on the anchor element instead of fixed width to .easyflexMenu.

You simply need to increase the z-index of the submenu, by e.g. adding
.nav ul ul{
z-index:99;
}
The z-index property specifies the z-order of an element and its
descendants. When elements overlap, z-order determines which one
covers the other. An element with a larger z-index generally covers an
element with a lower one.
Although a value of 99 is likely excessive in this case, z-index effectively dictates the layering precedence of the element in question. note that in order to apply, the element will also need a position set (which your sub menu's already have)
Add
.content{
z-index: -100;
}
The content was like becoming an overlay on your dropdown menu item. So the cursor active scope was getting lost.
or add z-index in positive value for the menu
I'd like to have the navigation bar centered and the text placed to left as it is, but when I add the h3-tag the navigation bar moves to the right. How can I do this?

I used the navigation bar from: http://css-snippets.com/drop-down-navigation/
Anything that is in the document flow is going to affect the position of the menu. So you would would have to take the h3 out of the flow by positioning it absolutely.
#toptext {
margin: 5px 0px 0px 10px;
padding: 0;
font-style: bold;
font-size: 2em;

This has other issues but solves your initial problem.

Its because your h3 is inside the nav div. try making the h3 absolute positioned and your .nav class relatively positioned.
