Agency free theme in Bootstrap comes a long with GitHub favicon, I cannot track where the GitHub favicon comes from and that's why I can't change it. It didn't override the starting favicon when I added my custom favicon between <head></head> tags.
You can use this way. and go to W3School

Probably it is a cache problem... try to force the favicon refresh using the link tag and a querystring on your filename.

You can also try reloading with no cache (ctrl + f5) or restarting the browser
For example, remove parts of code for your project.

In your index.html, you used this to supposedly create the favicon:

However, you forgot the type attribute. It should be:
<link rel="icon" type="image/png" href="https://i.ibb.co/SBX2vY1/inkthoughtinvis.png" />
Additional note: If permitted by copyright licenses, it is best that you download the image to your local storage and then set the location into the href attribute. In the scenario that the website host removes the image, it will not display.

I have been trying to add a favicon to my webpage for a 9th grade school project. I am using Coda 2. I haven't acquired a domain and the webpage isn't hosted online. I've read that one could upload the image URL to their root directory or something along those lines however I can't do so in my situation. Is it possible to add a favicon on my HTML document if I view it on Google Chrome? If yes, what's the code to do so?
I have used the code below however it doesn't seem to work. I have also converted it to png and changed the 'type' but that too doesn't work. I've already made sure that the HTML document and image file are in the same folder.

I'm hosting a website using Github Pages. I connected Cloudflare to the website because of SSL. When i finally added favicon.ico to my website and the following code in <head> to make the favicon show up, it still doesn't show up. What can i do?

I have had the exact same problem. I was able to solve it by including a ? in the end.

if you did something like this , then go to your github.io page and hard reload.
You can use
ctrl/cmd + shift + r
to hard reload the page . That will clear your cache .
If you've deployed a project created using npm to Github Pages and if your build files are in a separate sub-directory, you'll have to define the path to the favicons like this (note the dot).

Spent about an hour trying to figure out why i was experiencing the same problem. Clearing history, updating code didnt work.
Restarted chrome browser and worked straight away ahah
Just upload the favicon to your root directory and give it the name "favicon.ico". By putting it in your root directory, you'll have a default favicon for all the pages in your domain.
Depending on the browser you use, you can add the following two lines into the head section of your pages.

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon">
Make an PNG file and set it as the favicon in an index.html page so the cache is overwritten:

It works.
Try uploading the icon somewhere on the web, and link it to that image url. I remember having issues with accessing a background-image on local machine, but if I was trying to link it from the web, I had no problems. I think this should do the trick. Didn't use it though.

The favicon that I am trying to use for a site is showing up on the Firefox tabs, but not on the Chrome tabs.
Yes, there are some problem with the chrome while you work on a local machine.
Try uploading your webpages to any web hosting site and there with http:// this will work fine with every browser.
IE may also not work for this on local machine. Try it in Firefox of safari

Here again if someone first see this question:
1) Clear your chache. http://support.google.com/chrome/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=95582 And test another browser, lets say safari. How did you import the favicon?
2) How you should add it:
Normal favicon:
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
PNG/GIF favicon:
<link rel="icon" type="image/gif" href="favicon.gif" />
<link rel="icon" type="image/png" href="favicon.png" />
3) Another thing could be the problem that chrome can't display favicons, if it's local (not uploaded to a webserver).
4) Try to rename it from favicon.{whatever} to {yourfaviconname}.{whatever} but I would suggest you to still have the normal favicon. This has solved my issue on IE.
5) Found another solution for this which works great! I simply added my favicon as Base64 Encoded Image directly inside the tag like this:

On Local Host I was having this problem
So I changed the url
from
<link rel="icon" type="image/x-icon" href="/static/images/system/favicon.ico">
to
<link rel="icon" type="image/x-icon" href="../static/images/system/favicon.ico">
Notice the double fullstops before the href
