I have created a webpage (at present it will work in desktop mode only) by seeing an image.
At this moment, I am able to create nearly 40-50% of the webpage but I am not sure how to create 6 square boxes (ADDITIONAL SPORT, COLLEGIATE, INDIVIDUAL, PROFESSIONAL, ENTERTAINMENT, COMMERCIAL) beneath the background image(where the guy is standing). I have included all my CSS and HTML codes in the fiddle. I tried creating boxes but automatically it is going over the top of an image(not sure why).
I tried putting the following set of codes beneath the nav section but unfortunately it didn't work.
<div class="squares">
<p class="square1">ADDITIONAL SPORT</p>
<p class="square2">COLLEGIATE</p>
<p class="square3">INDIVIDUAL</p>
<p class="square4">PROFESSIONAL</p>
<p class="square5">Additional Sport</p>
<p class="square6">Additional Sport</p>
</div>
Let me know what I am doing wrong.
Try this:
<div class="squaresRow">
<div class="square">ADDITIONAL SPORT</div>
<div class="square">COLLEGIATE</div>
<div class="square">INDIVIDUAL</div>
</div>
<div class="squaresRow">
<div class="square">PROFESSIONAL</div>
<div class="square">Additional Sport</div>
<div class="square">Additional Sport</div>
</div>
<style>
.squaresRow {
width: 100%;
}
.square {
width: 33%;
display: inline-block;
text-align: center;
}
/* adds a margin between the two rows */
.squaresRow:first-child > .square {
margin-bottom: 2%;
}
</style>
If you look at the results in "Full Page" view you can see two rows of squares. Note: you may view this revision here as well. (The code also corrects some minor HTML and CSS errors, too.) I added a red border around the squares just for emphasis and it may certainly be removed in finalizing this page.

Also, see excellent related discussion here
If you are using a CSS framework like Bootstrap or a CSS tool like Flex-box, doing something like would be very easy. Try looking into these tools.
But just using raw CSS and html. try.
First, add a class to your squares so that you can target all square divs
.squares {
position: aboslute;
width: 300px;
}
.square {
text-align: center;
margin: 0px;
background-color: red;
width:100px;
height:100px;
float: left;
}
<div class="squares">
<p class="square square1">ADDITIONAL SPORT</p>
<p class="square square2">COLLEGIATE</p>
<p class="square square3">INDIVIDUAL</p>
<p class="square square4">PROFESSIONAL</p>
<p class="square square5">Additional Sport</p>
<p class="square square6">Additional Sport</p>
</div>

I am making a website and I have chosen to use smooth scroll.
The smooth scrolling effect works, but if (for example) i chose to scroll down to the 'timeline' section, and then scroll back to 'home', it just stops scrolling midway through the home section. Why is this? Below you can see my webiste.
For example I have set this div as section1 (home):
<div id='section1' class="home-info">
Therefore, i thought that smoothscroll would take me to the top of that div. Turns out it only scrolls through half of it. Why is that???

I've created a left navigation bar using buttons. I'm trying to reduce the hyperlink area to just the background image. Also, another issue I'm having is the elements overlaying the background image are taking precedence over the hyperlink, so the button is not actually clickable. Page for reference
http://www.auburn.edu/administration/facilities/home-page/index.html
Hyperlink area
Here's the background image area
.img-responsive {
display: block;
padding: 0;
margin: 0;
}
.background:hover .head {
color: #d76e08;
}
.overlay {
position: absolute;
z-index: 1;
top: 0;
left: 0;
color: white;
}
.icon {
padding-top: 15px;
padding-left: 40px;
}
.head {
margin-top: -75px;
padding-left: 120px;
}
.content {
margin-top: -5px;
padding-left: 120px;
padding-right: 35px;
}
<div class="row">
<div class="col-sm-12">
<div class="background">
<a href="../Collin/misc/issues/index.html">
<img alt="background" class="img-responsive" src="buttons/images/button.png" />
</a>
<div class="overlay">
<div class="icon">
<img alt="test" class="img-responsive" src="buttons/images/info-icon.png" />
</div>
<p class="head">Ask Facilities</p>
<p class="content">Here will be text about the button. .</p>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
I'm trying to reduce the hyperlink area to just the background image.
Your markup is incredibly complex for what you are displaying.
You could have something like:
<ul>
<li>
<a>
<h2></h2>
<p></p>
</a>
</li>
<li>
<a>
<h2></h2>
<p></p>
</a>
</li>
</ul>
and add the image and the gradient using CSS.
I would use a single link tag for your button and leverage CSS gradients for the background:
* {
box-sizing: border-box;
}
body {
font-family: sans-serif;
}
.button {
background-image: linear-gradient(to bottom, #3D85C6, #07355F 50%, #07355F);
background-size: 100% 200%;
border-radius: 4px;
color: #fff;
display: block;
padding: 10px;
text-decoration: none;
transition: all 150ms ease-in-out;
}
.button:hover,
.button:focus,
.button:active {
background-position: 0 50%;
}
.button-icon {
float: left;
margin-right: 15px;
}
.button-content {
overflow: hidden;
}
.button-title {
font-size: 18px;
font-weight: bold;
}
.button-description {
font-size: 16px;
}
<a class="button" href="../Collin/misc/issues/index.html">
<div class="button-icon">
<img src="http://satyr.io/72/white?brand=github" alt=""/>
</div>
<div class="button-content">
<p class="button-title">Ask Facilities</p>
<p class="button-description">Here will be text about the button…</p>
</div>
</a>
Also here http://jsbin.com/rikisemawe/edit?html,css,output
The elements in OP were stacked in the markup, there were no nested components of the button. That would explain the unusual position coords and large padding.
Instead of <img>, background-image is used. Changed some of the tags to a real <button>, <h4> instead of <p>, etc.

Sorry about the long img src, well ive looked aroung and i found one thing but it didnt work for me. But what i am trying to accomplish is the image in the top right corner. so it would be like an actual banner. I did the position: absolute; but Is there something else? Should i Move the img tag?
I have two html files: index and portfolio. They use the same stylesheet. In index two divs extend to the full width of the container. However in portfolio the div only extends as long as the <h6>. I cannot figure out what is going on and how this could possibly be happening.
.container {
padding-top: 35px;
padding-left:18px;
padding-right:18px;
display:inline-block;
font-size: 0px;
overflow: hidden;
}
.spacer {
height: 2px;
}
h6 {
position:relative;
font-family:"code_boldregular";
font-size:18px;
margin: 0px;
top: 17.5px;
text-align:center;
}
#link1 {
position:relative;
height: 52.5px;
background-color: #545454;
width: 100%;
}
#link2 {
height: 52.5px;
background-color: #545454;
width: 100%;
}
<div class="container">
<div class="spacer"></div>
<div id="navlinks2">
<div id="link1" class="smalllinks"><a id="homeLNK" href="index.html"><h6>Home</h6></a>
</div>
<div class="spacer"></div>
<div id="link2" class="smalllinks"><h6>Portfolio</h6>
</div>
</div>
<div class="spacer"></div>
</div>
So I got a sketch of a designer I worked with and was wondering how I create the border arrows in the picture below
I tried to put out this font-awesome icon by using the :after selector, it got pretty ugly:
http://fortawesome.github.io/Font-Awesome/icon/angle-right/
So instead, I tried to put an arrow on an arrow through this arrow generator:
http://apps.eky.hk/css-triangle-generator/
It also became very ugly. So now I wonder if there is anyone who has a good idea on how to solve this?
How my html look like so far:
<div class="bx-pager bx-default-pager">
<div class="bx-pager-item">
<a class="bx-pager-link active" data-slide-index="0" href=""> 1. DIN EXPERT </a>
</div>
<div class="bx-pager-item">
<a class="bx-pager-link" data-slide-index="1" href=""> 2. VÅRA TJÄNSTER </a>
</div>
<div class="bx-pager-item">
<a class="bx-pager-link" data-slide-index="2" href=""> 3. CASE </a>
</div>
<div class="bx-pager-item">
<a class="bx-pager-link" data-slide-index="3" href=""> 4. KONTAKT </a>
</div>
</div>
You can create triangles with CSS borders by:
border-top: 20px solid transparent;
border-bottom: 20px solid transparent; /* 40px height (20+20) */
border-left: 20px solid green
I've created the same thing as you see above here:
#container {
width:150px;
height:40px;
background-color:green;
position:relative;
}
.arrow-right {
width: 0;
height: 0;
border-top: 20px solid transparent;
border-bottom: 20px solid transparent; /* 40px height (20+20) */
border-left: 20px solid green;
position:absolute;
right:-20px;
}
<div id="container">
<div class="arrow-right"></div>
</div>
Atlast!! :)
div.main {
margin-right:30px;
}
ol > li {
display: table-cell;
height: 30px;
position: relative;
padding: 0px;
margin: 0px;
text-align: center;
border: 1px solid #d68a3a;
}
ol > li > div {
position:relative;
line-height: 30px; /* equal to the list item's height */
height:100%;
width: 100%;
}
ol>li:hover {
background-color: #d68a3a;
cursor: pointer;
color: white;
}
ol {
display: table;
width: 100%;
padding: 0px;
margin: 0px;
position: relative;
}
ol > li > div:after, ol > li > div:before {
content:"";
display:inline-block;
border-width: 16px;
border-style: solid;
width: 0px;
height: 0px;
left: 100%;
top: -1px;
position: absolute;
z-index: 1;
}
ol > li > div:after, ol > li:hover > div:before {
border-color: transparent transparent transparent #d68a3a;
}
ol > li > div:before {
border-width: 14px;
display: block;
border-color: transparent transparent transparent #ffffff;
z-index: 2;
top:1px;
}
Working Fiddle
You have to make little bit changes to your html structure
Put active class at bx-pager-item element level
Put 1 extra element after anchor tag .
Please refer below code snippet.
Working fiddle link: Fiddle
.container {
max-width: 700px;
margin: auto;
}
.bx-pager {
display: flex;
align-items: center;
height: 34px;
border-left: 1px solid #d68a3a;
}
.bx-pager .bx-pager-item {
display: flex;
align-items: center;
height: 100%;
flex: 0 25%;
border-top: 1px solid #d68a3a;
border-bottom: 1px solid #d68a3a;

In case it is needed for others here is another solution, that can work as the requested answer, but will work if there is a need of separation of the elements.
Using the above examples, what will happen is that the background must always remain the same color. Like this it will always have a separation thus transparency between items.
Hope this helps, this post really helped me to find this solution :)
