Can't apply CSS Float - html

First off, I'm new and just started coding. For some reason, I cannot apply the CSS float class to the image. Anytime I try to load the float class, it simply will not load for me.
Here's what I have:
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8" />
<title>Lab3-2</title>
<style type="text/css">
body {
font-family: Arial,Verdana,Garamond;
font-size: 11pt;
}
h1,
h2,
h3 {
color: #19212d;
}
ul {
list-style-type: square;
}
a {
color: black;
}
a:hover {
background: #19212d;
color: white;
}
span {
color: #19212D;
font-weight: bold
}
.align-right {
float: right;
margin-left: 5px;
margin-right: 5px;
}
.align-left {
float: left;
margin-left: 5px;
margin-right: 5px;
}
</style>
</head>
<body>
<h1>Tierra Peak Hiking</h1>
<p>
<span>Tierra Peak Hiking</span> arranges a wide variety of day hikes for families, friends, and teams.
Imagine yourself hiking along a creek or viewing the beauty of the valley from the peak of a hiking trail. Stop by one of our offices.
</p>
<h3>Things to see:</h3>
<ul>
<li>Icicle Creek</li>
<li>View the Valley</li>
</ul>
<img class="align-left" src="/creek.jpg" width="259" height="387" alt="creek" />
<p>
Take a long hike along Icicle Creek and watch the majestic waters flow. Enjoy the soothing sounds of the rushing water while standing amidst the surrounding trees.
This hike is rated a double-boot because the climbing is moderately strenuous. However, the land immediately around the creek is flat and allows for frequent rest stops.

Why is header inheriting body font in CSS for styling? [duplicate]

What do commas and spaces in multiple classes mean in CSS?

I was styling my website and I choose Catamaran and Lato for headings and body respectively. However, the headers seem to inherit styles from the body which makes the font and the font size the same thing for my headings and paragraph. I was thinking that this is a problem of specificity but I cannot figure out what went wrong.

Thank you so much !
The following applies the contained CSS rules to the entire HTML Document (via the html tag):
html, body {
...
}
Where you attempted to apply styling rules to <h1>, <h2>, and <h3> elements, you instead applied the rules to all <h3> that are descendants of <h2> elements that are, in turn, descendants of <h1> elements.
h1 h2 h3 {
...
}
Instead, separate each tag with a comma (,) to apply the rules as desired, as shown below:
h1, h2, h3 {
...
}
Use
h1, h2, h3 {
font-family: 'Catamaran', Sans-Serif;
font-size: 66px;
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
color: var(--dark_red);
}
instead of
h1 h2 h3{
...
}
(Separate the heading (<h1>, <h2>, <h3>) tags using commas (,).)
Whatever you apply to the parent is also applied to the child, unless you specifically change that attribute for the child

First, you should move your <header> to inside your <body>. Second, you can remove the margin for #firstName by adding margin: 0 to the selector:
#firstName {
margin: 0;
}
Then, you can use Flexbox on #menu to center your menu vertically:
#menu {
/* Adds Flexbox to element */
display: flex;
/* Aligns the menu's children horizontally, putting equal
spacing between each child */
justify-content: space-between;
/* Aligns the menu's children vertically */
align-items: center;
}
#wrap {
margin: 0 auto;
width: 960px;
text-align: center;
}
body {
margin: 0 auto;
width: 960px;
}
#firstName {
/* Remove margin from the div */

height: 85px;
float: left;
font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;

#menu {

All I am trying to do at this point is get my HTML to recognize the external stylesheet so I can move on to a farther point. Any aid or guidance to finding the answer to this exercise would be greatly appreciated.
Try opening your web browser's Developer Tools console and reloading your webpage while watching the Console panel. You might see an error that will give you a hint as to why the CSS didn't load - perhaps the file path wasn't found.
Is your stylesheet in the same folder? If its in a different folder do ./foldername/lighthouse.css
Maybe you have your css inside of another Folder so you must be write on your link something like this /yourfolder/lighthouse.css
Forgive my ignorance if this sounds stupid, but it works in chrome but not IE(or edge). I assume there is a line of code that was in the HTML that would explain why (im pretty new to this)

Where is all this white space coming from?

Working on a project for my web design class and can't figure out where all this white space is coming from. Everything needs to touch each other yet I think I have extra padding somewhere but I just can't seem to pinpoint it. Here is all my code. Also, I'd like to know how to get rid of the bullets in my <ul> on the left. I've tried list-style-type:none but that doesn't seem to do anything.

Browsers have built-in styles adding some spaces (paddings & margins) by default, which are different across browsers.
You will need to do a reset css:
* {
padding: 0;
margin: 0;
}
About your bullets, you need to specify for both lists:
.sidebar1 ul, .sidebar2 ul {
list-style-type: none;
}
/* OR */
aside ul {
list-style-type: none;
}
To fix the sidebar bullet list use:
.sidebar1 ul{
list-style-type:none;
}

Changing a few lines gives different results even though it shouldn't

Problem has been resolved, thank you to everyone who has helped me with this. The problem was that I was using <.style> tags in the css file which is a HTML tag, which is not read properly in the css making varying things happen.
I working on an assignment for my HTML class and were getting into .css for external setup.
What I've been noticing is when I move one block of code into anothers spot, the entirety of my webpage changes, but what I moved seems to "no longer exist".
My css code is
<style>
body { background-color: #6699ff;
color: #d5e3ff;
font-family: verdana; }
header { background-color: #6699ff;
color: #003366;
font-family: serif; }
h1 { line-height: 200%; }
nav { font-weight: bold; }
#category { font-style: bold;
background-color: #6699ff;
color: #003366;
font-size: 1.1em; }
footer { font-size: 0.60em;
font-style: italic; }
</style>
And the page looks like: http://i.imgur.com/eGthqWR.jpg
But when I move the the body to where the header is
<style>
header { background-color: #6699ff;
color: #003366;
font-family: serif; }
body { background-color: #6699ff;
color: #d5e3ff;
font-family: verdana; }
h1 { line-height: 200%; }
nav { font-weight: bold; }
#category { font-style: bold;
background-color: #6699ff;
color: #003366;
font-size: 1.1em; }
footer { font-size: 0.60em;
font-style: italic; }
</style>
The page ends up looking like this... http://i.imgur.com/GxTfpTs.jpg
I'm really confused as to why it only uses the second "block" to actually get what the page should look like.
I can edit in my index page if you need to see that as well, but I'm pretty sure it's just an issue with how I'm coding the css file.
Here's the Index.html

If anyone knows whats wrong with mine, or why it seems to be doing that, I'd love to know! Thanks in advance -John
As a temporary fix to the problem, I was able to add a small single line of code as the "fodder" to being skipped and the header now works the way it's supposed to, and the rest is all according to plan!
THEFIX! {background-color: #6699ff;}
That's all I had to do and it works... kinda, I just hope that I can figure out how to get rid of "thefix" so it works without it.
Thanks for the help everyone, sorry that it wasn't worded very well and probably didn't make much sense, but yea... temporary workarounds ftw
You shouldn't use <style> and </style> in your css files — it's a html tags, not css syntax.
What's going on in your case:
You are trying to apply css rules to <style> body selector or <style> header selector depending on the order. There is no such elems in your html, so it in fact doesn't applies your first rule.
I try something like this, and change the order css code for header and body the result is same.
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<style>
/*
body { background-color: #6699ff;
color: white;
font-family: verdana; }
header { background-color: #6699ff;
color: red;
font-family: serif; }
*/
header { background-color: #6699ff;
color: red;
font-family: serif; }
body { background-color: #6699ff;
color: white;
font-family: verdana; }
</style>
</head>
<body>
<article>
<header>
<h1>Most important heading here</h1>
<h3>Less important heading here</h3>
<p>Some additional information here.</p>
</header>
<p>Lorem Ipsum dolor set amet....</p>
</article>
