I'm working on a software for managing the Rally company of my boss, where he can manage all the volunteers, their affectations, and many other things.
But the volunteers and these others things vary depending on the event, so they all have a column representing the event that they are linked/related to.
My boss requested that I add a "duplicate" button, that would duplicate an event (from my events table) and also duplicate all the volunteers, and values from any other table that is linked to that event, so the new duplications are linked to the new event.
The reason for this, is that he is constantly organizing rallies, and often it happens that the data from a Rally (event) to another is almost the same, so instead of adding it all manually, he'd rather make an entire duplication of the event and all the data related to it, then manually add and remove the errors in it.
I would like to know, is there any way in MySQL that I could duplicate an event, and everything that is linked to it's ID, even though they are in different tables, and make the duplications have the ID of the new event?
Sadly I don't have very much time, but until I get an answer I can work on other tasks my boss gave me.
Thank you so much to anybody who helps me or gives me any hint!!
EDIT:
Here's the schema of my Database (I know it's kinda dirty and there's issues with it, my boss gave me indications on how to create the database since he used to work in the domain before, but he didn't tell me how to make the links and he wants to make them himself)
And I apologize for the French language and the weird names..
Basically I wish to duplicate an entry in the "event" table, all the "affect" and "lieu" entries that are linked to it, and all the "tache" entries related the the duplicated "lieu" entries.
EDIT 2:
Thank you MrMadsen for the Query!
I had to fix it a bit, but here's what it looks like after.
SET #NEWEVEN = (SELECT MAX(NO_EVE) from db_rallye.event)+1;

(SELECT NO_LIE FROM lieu WHERE NO_EVEN = event_to_duplicate);
If a lot of the events contain similar information than I would create a template (or templates and the ability to create/modify templates) containing all of the information that you would duplicate.
Then when a new event is created he can just choose a starting template and then only add whatever data is unique to that event. In my opinion this would be much better than constantly duplicating the data.
As far as how to duplicate a row and all the associated rows, this is completely dependent on your database schema and how the tables relate to one another. If you post the relevant part of that we can help you more.
Edit
Here are the queries I came up with, test them in a dev database first but I think they will work. Let me know. Good luck!

I want to create a trigger that does the following:
copy one column of info jobnumber from one table (jobs) to another (materials) on an existing record to attachedjobnumber.
I haven't found the correct syntax to say this. when I insert a new job - nothing gets update and no new row is inserted,,, but there are no error messages in the logs.
I also need to set the bool (hasjobnumber) equal to true - when I test that trigger - it works fine.
which makes me think that setting the value of material.attachedjobnumber = jobs.jobnumber is the problem, my guess is that jobs.jobnumber isn't in reference when updating table material...
if that's true - what's the proper syntax for this?
I've tested separate triggers, and so far this trigger works fine.
UPDATE material
SET isjobyet = "HAS"
WHERE barcode1 IN (
SELECT primaryRFID
FROM jobs
WHERE jobs.primaryRFID = material.barcode1
)
since this code does work - I make the assumption that the non-static JobNumber value is the source of the problem. since "HAS" is correctly updated.
UPDATE material
SET material.AttachedJobNumber = jobs.JobNumber
WHERE barcode1 IN (
SELECT primaryRFID
FROM jobs
WHERE jobs.primaryRFID = material.barcode1
)
from this - I expect that after each inserts on the table jobs:
jobs.JobNumber be assigned to the material.AttachedJobName
this updates only the material row where the material.barcode1 =jobs.primaryrfid.
but no new row is inserted at all.
Before you perform UPDATE,
Actually you can use the same script using SELECT [skip the UPDATE SYNTAX]
That way you can monitor your script without committing anything yet.
And also I dont recommend using this inside the subquery
WHERE jobs.primaryRFID = material.barcode1
This condition connecting a table works on IN-SELECT subquery.
If you are performing subqueries inside the [WHERE] clause, try to treat it as different buffer, dont connect them first.
I’ve got a problem selecting some things in my database.
I’ve got 1 database with a lot of tables, however I only use 2 with this specific task.
I have a Clothing table, and I need to import this in my new database. I have succesfully transferred a lot of data, but now I need to take 1 final small step into completing this. In my Clothing table I have a column called Youtube link, here I have a link with an Youtube link, this specific link, in this specific column, I want to append that to another table I have in the database, let’s call it new_clothing_table. I there have a description column called prod_desc and I want to append the Youtube link to that column.
But there is also another “problem”, it’s not that every product has a Youtube link, so things have to be filtered in order to not fuck things royally up. A advantage I have, I have in both tables a product_name, and these are all the same. So I want to transfer that specific Youtube link if it’s there (sometimes there is a 0 filled in or nothing, but I dont think it’s NULL because if I make a SELECT query where Youtube_link is null I get zero rows..)
So can someone help me out>?
mysql has an update-join construct you can use:
UPDATE new_clothing_table nct
JOIN clothing c ON c.product_name = nct.product_name AND
c.youtube_link != '0'
SET nct.description = CONCAT(nct.description, c.youtube_link)
EDIT:
To make sure this does what you want, you could first select the updated content in order to examine it:
SELECT nct.description AS old_description,
CONCAT(nct.description, c.youtube_link) AS new_description
FROM new_clothing_table nct
JOIN clothing c ON c.product_name = nct.product_name AND
c.youtube_link != '0'
This is more of a theory question. I have a page with a bunch of various textfields, dropdown boxes, etc. Each user has his/her "own page" that can be updated via this update page that I am referring to. He updates the fields at his choosing. It passes about 30 variables (if every field is inputted) to a "preview page". If the person likes the preview page, then they click an "update" button at the bottom of the preview page and all the various variables are updated into the appropriate MySQL table and their "own page" that others see is updated dynamically. (let me know if this explanation isn't clear).
Inserting this information for the first time is easy. However, when a user wants to update only a few of the fields for his page later, this is where I am confused. How do I make the MySQL update query dynamic to recognize an update to ONLY the fields on the page that the user wants to update (while he leaves the other fields blank, thus leaving the old information intact for those columns, and they are disregarded in the update query).
Let me know if what I'm asking doesn't make sense and I'll try again.
Thanks for your help.
The easiest way to do this would be
UPDATE MyTable m SET m.f1 = COALESCE(input1,m.f1), m.f2 = COALESCE(input2,m.f2), ....
WHERE m.id = key;
The COALESCE will return the first non-null value (or null if all values are null).
Note that you can insert a default value after the existing field value if you want to force a default.
Like so:
UPDATE MyTable m SET m.f1 = COALESCE(input1,m.f1,default1), m.f2 = COALESCE(input2,m.f2,default2), ....
WHERE m.id = key;
See: MySQL: how to use COALESCE

I am trying to "syphon" data over from one table to another. The problem I run into is that some of the data which is going in the new table is static, other data is being copied from an existing table. Let me start by showing the query I was trying to run:
INSERT INTO current_cart
(cart_ID,
cart_PO,
cart_user,
cart_date,
cart_qty,
cart_sku,
cart_description,
cart_price,
cart_linetotal)
VALUES
('$cartID',
'$poNumberNew',
'$email',
'$lineDate',
SELECT
orderdetail_qty,
orderdetail_sku,
orderdetail_description,
orderdetail_price,
orderdetail_linetotal
FROM orderdetail
WHERE orderdetail_custemail = $email AND orderdetail_po = $poNumber)
Obviously, all the PHP variables are declared beforehand. Essentially what I have running is a shopping cart. This query would take the items from a previous order and enter them in a new shopping cart so our customer can start a new order based on a previous order.
The problem I run into is how to insert records into a table when some of the data for the record is static (cartID, poNumberNew, email and lineDate) and other information is coming out of a different table? I am hoping I can do this without creating a loop to repeat a query for however many items there were in the order the customer is duplicating... I think that would bog down our site significantly.
I've seen a myriad of awesome answers on many other web dev questions I've had in the past, I'm hoping the stackoverflow community can help me out here...
Thanks!
in a SELECT statement, you can have a column that returns an constant. For example,
INSERT INTO current_cart
(cart_ID,
cart_PO,
cart_user,
cart_date,
cart_qty,
cart_sku,
cart_description,
cart_price,
cart_linetotal)
SELECT
'$cartID',
'$poNumberNew',
'$email',
'$lineDate',
orderdetail_qty,
orderdetail_sku,
orderdetail_description,
orderdetail_price,
orderdetail_linetotal
FROM orderdetail
WHERE orderdetail_custemail = $email AND orderdetail_po = $poNumber)
Hey there I am trying to learn SQL by trying to complete online questions and I'm trying to create a view.
I have created a SELECT query that works and now trying to turn it into a view, though when following the online instructions and enter the script that should create a view I come up with the duplicate field error.
I've looked into it and it may be "doctor.fullname" as a duplicate field but this is from another table. Andway I have deleted and still tried it but the error still appears.
I know there is probably an easy solution and sorry to bother you with this but it will be must appreciated.
CREATE VIEW patient_registration_form
AS
SELECT
patient.patient_id,
patient.nok_no,
patient.f_name,
patient.s_name,
patient.sex,
patient.dob,
patient.marital_status,
patient.date_registered,
nok.tel_no,
nok.full_name,
nok.address,
nok.relationship,
doctor.doctor_id,
doctor.clinic_no,
doctor.full_name,
doctor.address
FROM doctor, patient, nok
WHERE doctor.doctor_id = patient.doctor_id
AND nok.nok_no = patient.nok_no;
You're returning several columns with the same name... full_name and address... even though they're from different tables. In this case, you have to give them different aliases:
SELECT
patient.patient_id,
patient.nok_no,
patient.f_name,
patient.s_name,
patient.sex,
patient.dob,
patient.marital_status,
patient.date_registered,
nok.tel_no,
nok.full_name as nok_full_name,
nok.address as nok_address,
nok.relationship,
doctor.doctor_id,
doctor.clinic_no,
doctor.full_name as doctor_full_name,
doctor.address as doctor_address
You have two full_name listed... one for nok.full_name and one for doctor.full_name. One needs to be renamed such as nok.full_name as nok_full_name.
