How to restrict the date in sql - mysql

I need a small validation in Sql for from date and to date columns i have.
suppose I have given 01/08/2014 and 30/08/2014
Again the front end user should not give this date period.
I can restrict by using below validation like,
select DocEntry from [#PR_OTIMESHEET] where U_frmdate >='20140801' and U_todate <='20140830'
but user may be give like
from date = 15/08/2014 and to date = 30/08/2014.
In this case above query is become false.
between 01/08/2014 and 30/08/2014 should not give again .
May I know how can I restrict the users ?

The way to query based on a date tends to change based on your database.
For Microsoft SQL Server you need to use CONVERT
Example:
CONVERT(datetime, '20140801', 112)
The 112 is a specified date format. See other date formats here. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-GB/library/ms187928.aspx
so your example should be:
select DocEntry from [#PR_OTIMESHEET] where U_frmdate >= CONVERT(datetime, '20140801', 112) and U_todate <= CONVERT(datetime, '20140801', 112)
NOTE: Your select range doesn't make any sense as the dates are the same!! So this will only return stuff where the date is exactly 2014-08-01 00:00:00

How to search data for a date value after than the specified one?

I have a basic SQL knowledge and I am trying to retrieve data from my database based on the date a user chooses. So, if the user selects 2018-03-01 I want to display the data for the date value 2018-03-02.
I can search data for a specified date in the following way:
select * from FLIGHTS where DEPARTURE_DATE = '2018-03-01';
Now I want to search the data for the date next to the specified so for '2018-03-02' in this case. I cant directly search for 2nd March because I don't know what date the user will choose
So is there any way to query data for the date next to the one specified?
I have already tried looking up everywhere but couldn't find anything that makes sense to me.
Thx
I think this works well. By the documentation for date/time functions, you should be able to do something like,
select * from FLIGHTS where DEPARTURE_DATE = '2018-03-01' + INTERVAL 1 DAY
What sort of element are you using for the user to be able to get their date and what is your codebase? We have mysql for the DB but we need to know if your codebase is c#, PHP etc.
Most languages generally have a function to allow you to add days to a datetime, if for instance you used C# and had a datetime selector posting its value you can do:
DateTime dateField = postedDateTime.AddDays(1);
from there you can easily escape the value and push it through your db call.
or PHP:
$dateField = date('Y-m-d', strtotime($postedDateTime. ' + 1 days'));
If you would like a date range (date selected and the next day) then you would adjust your php code to have:
$dateFrom = $postedDateTime;
$dateTo = date('Y-m-d', strtotime($postedDateTime. ' + 2 days'));
$dateTo = date('Y-m-d', strtotime($dateTo. ' - 1 seconds'));
//DB Query
$query = "select * from FLIGHT where DEPARTURE_DATE >= :dateFrom AND DEPARTURE_DATE <= :dateTo";
The above assuming you're using pdo, but you can see how to adjust for your situation. I am also assuming the datetime is based on midnight for each day so you may need to adjust your dateTo to take from 1 second before midnight the day after just so you can get the entire days data
You can make use of interval as day as mentioned in the answer. Along with day you can also have day_minute, day_hour,day_second but be sure when you are adding decimals on these.

SQL Change date format from yyyy-mm-dd to dd-mm-yyyy

I have created MySQL table :
CREATE TABLE EMP(
EMPID INTEGER NOT NULL (5),
SURNAME VARCHAR(25),
SAL INTEGER(5),
JON VARCHAR(25),
START_DATE DATE,
END_DATE DATE,
DEPNO INTEGER(5)
);
with following records:
INSERT INTO EMP
(EMPID,SURNAME,SALARY,JOB,START_DATE,END_DATE,DEPNO)
VALUES
('1','Vorosila','500000','COO','20150101',null,'1');
however I need to change date format from 2015 01 01 to 01 01 2015
Can anybody show me or tell me how to do that ?
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE
DATE values do not have a "format", they are objects that represent instants in time (or entire days, but still independent of formatting).
Formats are applied on input and output, so you just need to apply the correct format, which you can find in the MySQL manual, to the SELECT statement.
You cannot change the default date format in mysql.
I once hoped for the default date to be editable so I wouldn't have to jump through these hoops to get the date I actually wanted, mysql even has a date format system variable, but it is unused. Date Format Mysql - link
What you should really do is store it as the default format Year-Month-Date and then convert it on select.
The first thing I'd suggest is having your date columns as date types, which would give your dates the following format '2015-01-01'.
If you do this then you can use DATE_FORMAT - link - the second value in the DATE_FORMAT function allows you to customise the returned date, and there are many different thing you can do with this if you look at the link:
SELECT
DATE_FORMAT(`START_DATE`,'%d-%m-%Y')
AS `START_DATE`
FROM ...
The other option you have is to store your dates in the format that you already want as a char or varchar column.
HOWEVER, as should be obvious, this column will not be treated as storing dates, and so will not give you the correct comparisons in a where clause when using > < BETWEEN or the correct ordering in an order by clause. It is after all just a string of numbers in this case.
However you can then use STR_TO_DATE - link if you did need to use a where or order by on this column to change it back to a date within the query - in this case the second value is the custom format of your 'dates' in the column. Keep in mind with a where you will need to compare it with the correct mysql format as shown below:
SELECT
`START_DATE`
FROM table
WHERE STR_TO_DATE(`START_DATE`,'%d-%m-%Y') BETWEEN '2015-01-01' and '2016-01-01'
In MySQL you can change the format of a date using DATE_FORMAT method which is similar to to_char in Oracle.
DATE_FORMAT(SYSDATE(), '%DD-%MM-%YYYY');
For more information about specifiers check this thread http://www.sqlines.com/oracle-to-mysql/to_char_datetime
You can do what you probably want by creating a view and referring to that instead of the (underlying) table.
CREATE VIEW emp_view AS
SELECT empid,
surname,
sal,
jon,
date_format(start_date, '%d-%m-%Y') as start_date,
date_format(end_date, '%d-%m-%Y') as end_date,
depno
FROM emp;
Note that this changes the type of the date columns to varchar, so comparisons will no longer work as expected:
SELECT * FROM emp_view WHERE start_date > '01-12-1924'; // fails!

SQL query to select data between dates does not show last date

im using a query to get data between dates but for some reason it does not pull the data of the last date selected here is my query:
SELECT * FROM order WHERE status = "completed" AND orderdate >= ? AND orderdate <= ? ORDER BY orderid DESC
Im using is equal to or less then... but still?
what am i doing wrong ?
SELECT * FROM order WHERE status = "completed" AND date(orderdate) >= date(?) AND date(orderdate) <= date(?) ORDER BY orderid DESC
It happened with me also, but in my case instead of passing a date I was querying using a datetime variable, Please make sure you are querying with date variable only.
Make sure that orderdate is date as well as your query parameter is also date, or use appropriate function to convert them in date, than query.
Your dates are actually datetimes - so you are actually, in the case of the upperbound, saying "12 midnight" on whichever date you choose. Hence, if it tries to test a value at say 10am in the morning, it fails as being outside the range.
Either set the upperbound date one day forward, or explicitly only test the date part of the datetime...

Mysql Select with Dates and maybe Case when

im having a problem where i cant think of a solution, maybe im having a bad table-structure or i just dont know enough about mysql select commands to think of a good solution. Maybe you can help me out:
So i got a table that has a Column with the Date-format (yyyy-mm-dd) i wanted to select all upcoming dates so i did:
SELECT * WHERE date >= now.
This worked kinda well but i also got "dates" where only the year is entered (2014-00-00) i also wanted to select these but "now" is already bigger so i made another column with the year only and if the month, date or both arent known i will use 0000-00-00 and the Column "year" now i could select like this:
SELECT * WHERE date >= now AND year >=now(year)
Now all entrys with 0000-00-00 wont be selected. If i use OR the entrys from last year will be shown.
So thats my problem, is there any way i can change my table so i can have entries with only the year or only year and month and of course all together? I already considered get rid of the date-format and use simple INT with seperated columns for year, month and date. But i think i will have the same problem.
Sometimes i just want to do a capsuled select like
SELECT *
WHERE (date >= now AND year >= now(year))
OR date == "0000-00-00" (i know that this doesnt work)
If I understood your problem correctly, you could use this request:
WHERE (date >= now OR year > now(year))
There is probably a simpler way though, that would preserve your design, like initializing at January 1st (01-01) instead of 00-00
I think you can use this code:
$_SESSION['month'] = //set here your selected month
$_SESSION['year'] = //set here your selected year
SELECT * FROM table WHERE DATEPART(m,date) >= '".$_SESSION['month']."' AND DATEPART(yyyy,year) >= '".$_SESSION['year']."' AND date <> '0000-00-00'
Change your table structure format. Actually just allow for that field to have null value when not entered. By default it will be null then. You shouldn't be storing 0000-00-00 as a value for Date type field. I would rather leave it as null , or as suggested in some of previous answers, initialize it with some other date. It would be much easier to manipulate with database then.
the problem is that half of you write is not MySQL and your database schema is terrible...
You have the following problems:
column data date does not have the date data type.
To fix it, you need to add a cast to the select statement eg. cast(datecolumn as date)
select * from table where cast(datecolumn as date) >= '2014-01-10';
the way to use now date is using the now function.
select now(), date(now());
result> 2014-01-10 11:11:36, 2014-01-10
select * from table where cast(datecolumn as date) >= date(now());
Because your datecolumn is not a date (2014-00-00 is not a valid date), you need to use string manipulation to extract the year.
select substring('2014-01-01', 1,4)
result> 2014
select * from table where substring(datecolumn, 1,4) = year(now());
The comparassion operator is = and not ==
the select statement syntax looks like this (pay attention because you are missing the table in your statement)
select * from [Table] where [column] = condition ...
You probably need or instead of ands, therefore your query should look like this:
select * from FooTable where
cast(datecolumn as date) >= date(now())
or substring(datecolumn, 1,4) >= year(now())
or datecolumn = '0000-00-00'
You should use something like phpmyAdmin or mySQL workbench to test your sql queries before try to use them on php, java or whatever is your programing language.

how to get the data using from date and to date in sql server?

i need to retreive data from database with the condition from date to to date using between query,
my query is,
select * from Master where Date between '01-08-2013' and '30-08-2013'
but it retreive all data from the table...
i need only data with in that date..
i tried another one like,
select * from PatientMaster where EntryDate >= '01-08-2013' and EntryDate<= '30-08-2013'
how its posible..
whats wrong with my query...
sorry im very bad in english...
thank you in advance...
A date string has the syntax YYYY-MM-DD and not DD-MM-YYYY
select * from Master
where `Date` between '2013-08-01' and '2013-08-30'
for that you can use
select * from Master where Date >='01-08-2013' and dateadd(dd,1,'30-08-2013')
You have to convert your strings to dates. This page shows you how to do it in mysql, which is what you have tagged. For sql server, which is in your subject line, use this page.
Then you do a slight modification of your 2nd attempt. Instead of
and EntryDate <= the end date
you want
and EntryDate < the day after the end date
That takes care of any time components. It might not matter in your case, but it's a good habit to get into.
You'll be looking for an query that works with your format? (dd-mm-yy)
CAST to the desired format!
http://www.w3schools.com/sql/func_convert.asp
105 = dd-mm-yy
SELECT * FROM Master
WHERE CONVERT(date, Date, 105) BETWEEN '01-08-13' and '30-08-13'
Be conscious with regards of the choice of data type for date Columns,
with or without time, day or year first etc. and please do not use varchar
for dates...
know that it CAN be confusing to call a date column for only Date...
be consistent with high/lower case.
