I asked this question earlier but there was a typo in my post -not my code as the moderators (correctly) believed. I'm asking this again because the code appears correct.
I'm using php to build a link to files on our network drives. The link appears fine:

If I click on the link in the browser, it doesn't work -nothing happens, no error etc..
If I cut and paste the following out of the page source and paste it into the address the browser opens it right up.
file://///192.168.0.199/public/data/thefolder/ineed/100000-100999/K100212
I've tried it in both Firefox and Chrome with the same results. I'm stumped. Thoughts?
Edit: I found out the link works in IE (v11) but it opens the directory in Windows Explorer instead of the browser as Firefox and Chrome do if I paste the link into the address bar.
My first thought was some kind of browser security issue but why would it work when pasted into the browser address bar but not work when the link is clicked on?
Yes, there are a lot of slashes -it's a network drive and I'm drilling down in a tree. I didn't design it I just have to deal with it...

So, as Olly points out below -Links that access local/network file systems are intentionally disabled in both in Firefox or Chrome due to security restrictions - though it seems odd that both Chrome and Firefox allow you to access the same path through the address bar?? I'm teaching a Year7 class via Zoom on writing HTML, and I have one student on an iPad (the rest are on desktops/laptops), and they're not able to get their webpage to open in Safari (I'm using Chrome on Windows, which of course is simply a matter of double-clicking on the file). I'm trying to see what she sees, but I think Zoom is possibly not showing me the pop-up dialogues. She is using Notes to write the page (which looked to be the closest iOS equivalent to Notepad).
I Googled and sent her a few blogs, but still not working. I said she needs to click on Share and look for something like "copy path to file" or "copy link", and then paste that into the Safari address bar. She said when she did that Safari was showing the source code, not the rendered page. When she just taps the file it opens in Notes, not Safari. That made me suspect her file was actually index.html.txt (she tells me she has extensions switched on), but when I sent her my own file, which is definitely only index.html, she says the same thing is happenning.
Is anyone able to give me some definite step-by-step instructions (this is for a Year 7 student) on how to open their local HTML page in Safari?

Safari iPad no longer supports access to local or iCloud files. A number of iPadOS apps will however allow a user to view, edit, and test html code in files stored in local iPad, iCloud, or third party (e.g. Google or Dropbox) storage folders. One needs only to search in the App Store for “html editor” to see the list. Some of the apps have features that rival or exceed those found in tools on desktop (laptop) systems.
I had the same issue today on ios15.
There is a free app called Koder available on the App Store which will let you edit and view the HTML file. I’m no expert but the editor looks pretty fully featured at first glance.
Sorry to say but an iPad is obviously not the best place for simple HTML editing. At least not with the default apps available on iOS.
Given an existing HTML File one can use Files app to navigate to it and open it with double click. This will open the file in a very simple viewer wich is at least able to render the HTML. As a developer i bet its using WKWebView which is basically Safari's HTML View.
Turns out Microsoft Edge, unlike Safari, can still open local html files. Discovered in this answer. To wit:
Install Microsoft Edge from the App Store
Open Files (or whatever file browsing app you like).
Open the file, then tap the Share button to send to another app.
Scroll across to "More...", choose Edge, and voila!
I have a very simple question I could not find answer for myself: I want links in OneNote to open in Chrome.
Note that the default browser is IE and I cannot change it (not admin etc).
Tried: "chrome_path url" - didn't work. Everything I could think about didn't work.
Please provide explicit solution so that link from within OneNote opens in Chrome rather than in IE.
To note, there are multiple links, so batch file won't do in this case.

I had a little go with testing some ideas that I had though I'm very new to OneNote. It's easy enough to open Chrome from a hyperlink:
Select text to link
Add link
Select the file icon and navigate to chrome.exe. In my instance - C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe
I believe you cannot pass arguments to the exe as it is considered a security issue. This certainly used to be the case and I'm not sure if they have modified their thinking since. The only way I can think of is to create a batch file which includes your ideal website and link to the batch file:
"start chrome http://www.youtube.com"
I found two ways to do it, though neither is the perfect:
There is a 3rd party OneNote add-on which adds more browsers in the right-click menu. Though it is not free and maybe can't be installed on restricted computers.
It works only on OneNote docs which are saved onto Onedrive. Open the OneNote page which has the links right in the Chrome, not in the desktop app. Then any links you click will open in the same browser. You can get the address of the OneNote page by clicking on 'Copy Link to Page' in OneNote app, then paste it to a notepad. Copy the first url to Chrome's address bar.
For those who has admin right, this problem can be solved by following Make Chrome your default browser. It is set at machine level, not onenote level.

I found some links from 2013 where this was once a bug in Chrome but said it was fixed.
Could someone point me to an authoritative source that can explain why this no longer works? I assume that this is security by the browser and not an angular issue (since view-source is whitelisted and used to work)
Looks like Chrome and Firefox (at least) disabled this within the past year or so
I found this thread, and these release notes explaining why and provides a timeline as to when the change took place.

Chrome responds with the "Not allowed to load local resource:" as a security protocol. I'm not sure why this used to work, but not now, though there is no real way around this unless web-security is disabled. There may be a different outcome on other browsers, but ultimately you are correct in thinking that it's Chrome's security.
The reason is that Chrome tries to preload URLs in background, to speed up your browsing experience.
If you open the DevTools after loading the page, the content of the items listed on the Resources tab may not be populated. This is also true of network requests on the Network tab. To see the fully populated resources on the Resources tab, first open the DevTools, then refresh the page, or navigate to the desired page with the DevTools open. Now select the html resource and it should be populated.
So i have been running into this problem with a lot of Wordpress sites lately, usually occurring when i am logged in as Admin, so i couldn't post here because no one would be able to view the problem. However, i just found a site that it happens on that doesn't require admin creds.

When i visit this site in Chrome (Version 34.0.1847.137 m), it just displays a blank page. No errors, just the (what now seems standard) event.returnValue is deprecated. Please use the standard event.preventDefault() instead. warning. I have seen that warning signify problems on the site, but they are usually minor, not to the extent that the above URL displays. However, if i open an Incognito window and visit the site everything works perfectly and there is no warning. Does the Incognito window deal with webpages in a way that is so entirely different that it would cause something like this to happen?
I have been racking my brain trying to figure this out. Can anyone reproduce this? is it a bug in chrome?
EDIT: I just tried to open a bounty on this question and the EXACT same thing happened. In Regular Chrome, nothing happened when i clicked the start a bounty link and i saw various errors Undefined is not a function however in incognito everything worked perfectly. what gives?!
EDIT: Yes, i have cleared the cache, history, cookies, everything, and i still get the same errors. I cant even post a comment on this question because of errors...
I came across the same issue when trying to open evernote.com. It loaded successfully while using incognito mode in chrome. Let me share how I fixed this even though the original post is way too old. But maybe someone can find it useful.
I'm using chrome (Version 73.0.3683.103 (Official Build) (64-bit)) running on Linux Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS.
I tried disabling all extensions and clearing browser data/cache but nothing worked. PS: Disabling adblock previously worked for me. Yes, I stumbled over the same issue before and whitelisting evernote in adblock solved the issue. But it didn't now.
The following is what worked for me:
Open developers tools (CTRL + SHIFT + J).
Navigate to Applications tab.
Choose Clear storage from the side menu
Hit Clear site data button.
After reading the comments I dug into chrome and saw there was a bunch of extensions still sitting around that were definitely malware and I thought I had previously deleted. Instead of picking through them one-by-one, I just deleted everything, re-installed Chrome, and now everything works great!
I had the same issue. My application was working in Incognito mode and in Firefox but not in Regular Chrome. I even disabled all the extensions but no luck. I eventually cleared the Cached images and files because on developer console I found out that the regular chrome was still picking up the old file due to caching. So as soon as I cleared it, my app showed up like a rocket :)
Try removing any non required extension .

I resolved the problem post that.
Since on Incognito , extensions are disabled, hence page run as expected.
I resolved this unforeseen issue using following steps.
CTRL + SHIFT + DEL > Clear Browsing Data.
Cookies and other site data
Cached images and files
This is for Chrome Browser.
Open Console (Ctl+Shift+I) first.
Then under the application tab, you will find some options on the left, find out the application there, you will find it at the top.
There you will find Service Workers.
Under Service Workers, there will be three checkboxes. Select Update on reload checkbox and reload again.
I had the same issue after installing React-Sight Extention.
The Page hanged but not in the incognito mode.
Try deleting any recently added or junk extension.
Delete your cache.
That worked for me
I had a similar issue in chrome, in my case the problem was that I could log in to my university library's website only in incognito mode. After some digging, I figured out that Google Translate extension was set to automatically translate any page. When I turned that off and instead selected never translate that specific page, it started working in the usual mode as well.
This is rather an old issue but still happens. None of the solutions recommended here and there did not solve the issue in my case.
I somehow noticed this is related with a -some kind of- corruption on the user profile.
This is how I solved it:
Close all Chrome browsers.
Open a Google page on Chrome.
Sign-out from Google (rigt click your profile picture on a Google page, not on the Chrome itself), and sign-in.
If this doesn't work:
Close all Chrome browsers.
Right click Chrome icon and select Google Chrome.
Delete your Google profile on the "select your profile" page.
Close Chrome.
Open Chrome, sign-in.
uBlock Origin was the culprit in my case. Once I allowed the site in uBlock Origin, pages loaded correctly in normal Chrome.
I have a screen full of code that displays for about half a second on loading some pages in chrome.
I managed to grab a screenshot of it.
I think this one is from a google search for the London tube map.
I have disabled chrome extensions and antivirus but it still appears.
Does anyone know what this is?
In this particular instance the code is generated by Bitdefender Traffic Light extension. If the antivirus is installed, the extension seems to be enabled without being displayed in Chrome's list of extensions.
Disabling the antivirus doesn't seem to disable the extension. But you can clearly see it is activated in a google search as each link has a specific icon next to it.
Other extensions might do a similar thing, but in the lower-left part of the screenshot, the code is:
fraud_link = "http://trafficlight.bitdefender.com/info?url={URL}&language=en_US";
Which makes it obvious this extention is causing the code to be displayed.
