Clicking an empty space in gnome-terminal selects the whole line - suse

I have a very frustrating problem: left-clicking an empty space in gnome-terminal selects the whole (empty) line.
This pretty much kills all the copy-paste functionality of gnome - in order to copy from one window to another I need to change focus to the other window, and just changing the focus selects the empty space and clears the previous selection.
More details:
I'm connecting to a Linux machine through VNC.
Same problem happens with different VNC clients.
Linux Distro: SLES 11 SP2 (i586)
Linux machine is a virtual machine on top of VMWare ESXi
VNC Server: TightVNC Server version 1.3.9
I found the description of same problem on ubuntu forums, but there was no resolution posted.

Decided to answer my own question, in case anyone is interested in this issue.
The problem was unsolvable in the existing setup - I tried every possible solution I could find on the web.
Changing VNC Server helped.
Looks like it's a problem of TightVNC Server (or maybe of this particular version of the TightVNC).
With other servers (e.g. RealVNC) everything works fine.

An Internal error occured error code 0x4 remote desktop connecting to google cloud Compute Engine VM

When tyring to login to RDP the "old" remote dekstop connection gave "an internal error occured"
And the new modern UI remote dekstop from windows store with version 10.2.1810.0 gave: error code 0x4 remote desktop
It seems a colleage has been logged in with wierd screen size. How can I resolve this without rebooting the machine?
I found a solution.
In the new GUI untick:
"Uppdatera fjärrsessionens upplösning vid storleksändring" in Swedish
Which translates to: Update the resolution of the remote session when resizing
Update remote sessions resolution when size change
Actually, even moving the port off 3389 doesn't help (for long)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TerminalServer\WinStations\RDP-Tcp\PortNumber
if there is an open port allowing RDP they will find it eventually and you will need to implement one of the above programs noted by Daniel. That was exactly my issue as well. You can usually tell if the problem is intermittent since it's just luck to get by the constant pounding on the open port...
For me, it was the graphic choice. No idea why but as I swap between the 4 options, only one works
I needed to set it to Highest Quality (32 bit)
However, I then restarted the server, and it no longer worked but True Colour (24 bit) did work! So, hopefully by toggling through each will get you through
In my case the cause was AVG Firewall blocking some RDP connections. I had to configure AVG Remote Access Module to allow RDP connections from some known IP addresses.
Hope this helps someone.
Looks like this error code pop up for many things... from screen resolution resize to colour depth to firewall and more... Which is quite odd. You have to check what is your specific case.
In my case, when I had problems with error code 0x4, it was related to unprotected RDP port.
In my case, it was caused by open, unprotected, RDP port 3389. As many would guess, this is a highly targeted port by bots. If your port is open to anyone in the internet, it's just a matter of time that your server or computer will be targeted.
The best solution would be to only allow connections from trusted IP addresses, the ones you use for connecting to your server.
Of course, that can't always be possible, so another solution would be something like the fail2ban utility used on many Linux servers.
The two solution I've found are EvlWatcher which is free and open source, and IPBan that have a free and open source version, but also a paid version.
You only need one of them, as they do the same thing. Do not install both. They will scan your logs and will temporary or permanently block any IP address with repeated fail connections. I suggest you always have your main IP address whitelisted, so you don't lock yourself out.
Best regards to you all.

MacOS MySQL Gone Away and local networking issues due to GateKeeper

On MacOS Mojave 10.14.5, local services relying on TCP connections have connections randomly aborted, resulting in errors like "Mysql has gone away" and Nginx connection resets.
Seems like the Mojave OS is monitoring and blocking TCP connections, even if the firewall is disabled.
I managed to get MySQL working in a docker image, however this is much slower than native MySQL service. Same applies to NGinx.
A lot of blog articles online cover this issue with MySQL, recommending to increase wait_timeout and max_packet_size, which does not work in this case as the issue is most likely not with MySQL itself (in fact, local Nginx seems also to be affected).
Just spent 2.7K on a brand new MacBookPro and feel like I can't work with it...
Any help?
Chatted with Apple Support, who recommended to do an SMC reset, which I have done twice and it did not help... They don't really offer support for the OS issues... Was about to return the MacBookPro and buy a Linux laptop...
... and then figured it out!!!
As part of installation instructions for a third-party VPN software, I have been asked to run the following command on my MacOS Mojave 10.14.5:
sudo spctl --master-disable
This was to allow ALL applications to be installed on the system, bypassing System > Privacy settings (adding a third option "Allow all"), basically working around the GateKeeper service to allow for the VPN app to install.
This was meant to be disabling GateKeeper, so it won't interfere with the application, however it looks like GateKeeper is still doing something shady, and actually causing the networking issues.
Anyway, it was enough to switch it back and restart the MacBook:
sudo spctl --master-enable
in Terminal and reboot.

Can't log in to an app running on LocalHost - no network activity?

I'm working on an app with a team. They are able to log in fine when running it on their local servers, however when I try to do so I get 'Invalide username / password' and no network activity or console errors in dev tools.
I have no idea why this could be, we're working on the exact same code - clearly it's something on my machine.
Has anyone come across anything like this before?
(Have tried other browsers and still nothing).
Maybe you need to check your server instalation on your machine.
For example, if you are using XAMPP to manage your Apache maybe there is some configuration that was set in the wrong way.
My advice is, save your code and re-install your server, pay attention to all configuration details and see if the problem is solved.

Accessing webserver

I have a vague question and I'm not excactly a computer specialist, so don't be too hard on me.
I have a program running on a linux server, which is assembled in a html document, which I run on the linux server using firefox. Basically it's a number of png pictures, which I can interact with. I can click on them, and data about this particular picture appear. This data stems from a mysql database.
Everything is working fine on the linux server.
Now I'm trying to acces this program through another computer coupled up on our local network, by pressing the url of the linux server into a webbrowser. This also works. I see excactly the same png files, except when I click on them, nothing happens. It seems there is no connection to the mysql server, where the data is on.
I know it's vague, but does anyone have a clue about what I might be doing wrong?
Thank you
First step see the permissions on the server side!
Second step see how you are doing the connections!
For more help you have to explain how you are doing these two steps.
I had a similar problem with a file upload and it was due to errors performing these two steps.

Xampp doesn't work on Mac X

So here is what happens when i run xampp by clicking on the manager-osx.
I click on "manager-osx".
Icon jumps in the dock as if it is starting the service.
Asks for admin password. I enter the password.
It accepts the password, and application keep jumping in the docs for 3-4 times.
The app disappear from the dock.
The issue started after i have quit few processes from the activity monitor.
I am not sure what has affected xampp and can't remember what services i have stopped as there were many.
Solution applied so far:
Restarted my MacBook Pro.
Exit all other application and tried to run xampp.
Made sure no other application is running on port 80.
Removed xampp from applications and tried to reinstalled. Same issue with re-installation process, It asks for admin password and then nothing happens.
search online for any help but nothing helpful found.
I haven't got any experience with XAMMP but MAMP works always fine for me. MAMP has everything I need in terms of functionality.
I would recommend MAMP
If MAMP is not the best solution for you. You can install manualy
APACHE + PHP + MYSQL (It's not so hard)
Just go step by step using tutorial like
This
Manual installation will give you much more controll on your enviroment.
And also you will have better output to attach it here if you can't find a problems.
Of course it's little bit longer than 3 clicks. But on all production servers you need to install environment manually. This knowledge you will use later much more times. You will better understand how all is works and how to find reason of bug.(error)
