Problem with c3p0 and MySql wait_timeout - mysql

I'm getting com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.MySQLNonTransientConnectionException: No operations allowed after connection closed.Connection was implicitly closed by the driver error after sometime in my webapp. That "sometime" was 8 hrs but i found out that by default, the server closes the connection after eight hours if nothing has happened. So i changed "wait_timeout" to 30 sec. and changed hibernate.c3p0.idle_test_period property in hibernate.cfg.xml to 10 sec

Spring MVC & Hibernate stops working after 8 hours

The following xml config file stops working after 8 hours of inactivity with this Error:

I'm currently using Spring MVC 4.3.8 and Hibernate 4.1.9. with C3P0 conections pool for MySQL. I thought with C3P0 this would be solved, but it's not.

Software caused connection abort: recv failed --
This usually means that there was a network error, such as a TCP timeout.
also set timeout param with default = 0 for hibernate.c3p0.timeout
hibernate.c3p0.timeout – When an idle connection is removed from the
pool (in second). Hibernate default: 0, never expire.
set autoReconnect , hibernate.c3p0.autoReconnect = true or as url connection param : jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/test?autoReconnect=true
Add < property name="hibernate.c3p0.preferredTestQuery">SELECT 1</property>
and check it log that c3p0 execute it(if not add real select count(1) from real table with limit 1). Also check your network timeout
I have experienced this issues some time google cloud sql where the SQL server breaks all the connection after idle time out of 10 hrs. But in the application we still have the sessionFactory instance and can create sessions but when you actually fire a db query it fails with broken connection exception.
None of the below attempts worked.
1. auto reconnect set in connection url
2. auto reconnect, timeout, validation properties in xml file.
3. Wrote a polling service to make a jdbc call to keep the connection active for every 8 hrs (<10 hrs idle time out period)
4. Closed and opened new sessionFactory for every db operation.
Finally i have created a polling service which will shutdown the sessiongFactory and create a new one.
NOTE: Calling close method on sessionFactory object is not sufficient. You need to explicit set it to null;
This may be a workaround but it saved me from day restart of the application.
I was not using spring just rest service with hibernate.

The problem is that when the "hibernate.connection.url" has the IP address (of my VM) like just "localhost" all works but when it is an IP number (except for 127.0.0.1) i get this error:

hibernate mysql problems

there are 2 things i wish to do mysql database from hibernate.cfg.xml;
To have utf8 characters so it can save character č,ć,ž,đ,š and repoduse them as thay are, not as ? in tapestry application.

well, in your cfg file for that č,ć,ž,đ,š characters you need to set character set to utf-8 also:
default-character-set=utf8
or something like this,..., I'm not really into this hibernate stuff but I know that you need to do this. "charset=utf-8"
also have Increased server timeout with next commands:

set ##session.wait_timeout=31536000

Database Connections Aren't Closing

I'm using spring 3.0 (jdbcTemplate), Tomcat, MySQL and C3p0 to handle my database activities. I'm using both jdbctemplate and simplejdbctemplate which will take care of creating and closing connections, statements, resultsets etc. I'm using C3p0 for connection pooling however the connections are remaining open and eventually the app will run out of connections.
Here is the configuration of my data source:

I would agree with axtavt. I was in a similar situation, and there were couple places I was manually opening connections but not closing them (stored procedure calls for iSeries). Please verify if you have that kind of spots.

Hibernate, C3P0, Mysql -- Broken Pipe

MySQL seems to have an 8 hour time out on its connections. I'm running multiple WARs in Tomcat utilizing Hibernate for ORM. After 8 hours (i.e. overnight), I get broken pipes when it picks up an idle connection.
I've already traced through the code and made doubly sure I commit or rollback all transactions.

The parameter I thought would have fixed it was the c3p0.idle_test_period -- It defaults to 0. However, we still have the Broken Pipe issue after 8 hours of running. While there are multiple posts index via Google, none arrive at a satisfactory answer.
So it turns out I was missing a key line that enabled c3p0 (the c3p0 parameters I was tweaking were having no effect because Hibernate was using it's built in connection pool -- which it appropriately warns is not suitable for production). In hibernate 2.x, setting the hibernate.c3p0.max_size property enabled c3p0 connection pooling. However, in 3.x you must specify the following property --

Additionally, here are my final configuration parameters --

It's rather unfortunate that both Hibernate and c3p0 have abysmal documentation in this regard.
There are two things going on here. You should read this article for more details, but the take-aways are:
You can adjust the MySQL wait_timeout setting to something larger than 8 hours, if desired.
The Hibernate settings should include "hibernate." before the "c3p0", e.g. hibernate.c3p0.idle_test_period instead of just c3p0.idle_test_period
This is a solution when you have a broken pipe because of combination of tomcat's wait_timeout=28800 sec(8h) and maxIdleTime=0 in c3p0:
I've changed the local tomcat wait_timeout via my.ini file to 120sec (2 min). And I placed the following:
maxIdleTime=100
idleConnectionTestPeriod=0 (same as default/as if it didn't exist)
other:
acquireIncrement=2
minPoolSize=2
maxPoolSize=5
maxIdleTimeExcessConnections=10
I had no problems with this setup.
I didn't need to use idleConnectionTestPeriod!
If tomcat's wait_timeout is 28800 sec, and maxIdleTime is 25200, it means that c3p0 will close the idle connection in 3600sec (1h) earlier, before tomcat throws a "broken pipe" exception. Isn't that right?!
As you can see I have no issues with providing only maxIdleTime.
Unfortunately, these:
maxIdleTime
idleConnectionTestPeriod
configuring_connection_testing
testConnectionOnCheckin
don't explain too much the corner cases.

- I have that wait_timeout issue on mysql. First I set /etc/my.cnf wait_timeout=10
then I changed the Idle time out value to lower than the wait_timeout value which < 10
That solved my problem.

I was getting the same problem and it took time to figure out the solution.
I use Hibernate 4.0.1 and mysql 5.1(no spring framework) and I was facing the issue. First make sure that you configured the c3p0 jars properly which are essential.
I used these properties in hibernate.cfg.xml

But it's of no use 'cause C3p0 was still taking the default properties not the properties which I set in hibernate.cfg.xml, You can check it in logs. So, I searched many websites for right solution and finally I came up with this. remove the C3p0 properties in cfg.xml and create c3p0-config.xml in the root path(along with cfg.xml) and set properties as follows.

but if you run, ORM takes the jdbc connection but not C3p0 connection pool 'cause we should add these properties in hibernate.cfg.xml
