I receive a patches from a contributor. Apparently, he produces the patches in trunk. However, I would like to commit his changes to a new branch. May I know how I can do so through Tortoise-Hg?
The directions found below assume you want the patches isolated on a named branch.
Using the command-line, it is easy to apply patches to a new named branch. However if you want to do this using TortoiseHg only, you must create the named branch with an empty commit prior to applying the patches.
Using the command-line:
hg branch <branch name>
hg qimport --push <patch-file-1>
hg qimport --push <patch-file-2>
hg qfinish --applied
Using TortoiseHg v1.1.x:
Import the patch files to your patch queue (without applying them).
Create a new named branch using an empty commit:
Open a commit dialog
Click the button labeled "branch: default"
Select "Open a new named branch"
Enter your branch name in the provided text box
Click the OK button.
Enter a commit message (e.g. "Created branch for patches from ") and click "Commit".
Apply the patches in your patch queue (one at a time or all together).
Right-click on the patches in your patch queue and select "Finish Applied"
Using TortoiseHg v2.0.x:
The same process used for TortoiseHg v1.1.x will work. The process to create the named branch with an empty commit is slightly different, but the overall concept is the same.
In TortoiseHg 2.7, update to the branch you want to apply the patch to (or create it if it doesn't exist). Choose Repository > Import and use Browse... to select an individual patch file, or Browse Directory... to import a folder of patches.
The original branch from where the patch came from doesn't matter to hg import unless you use the option --exact. So, you should create the branch you want and apply the patch:
hg branch new_branch
hg import /tmp/patch.txt

I have 3 commits which I pushed to the public repository accidentally. I want to revert to an older version (a version before these 3 commits happened) and make it the current code in our public repository.

Option 1
You can use the strip option as mentioned in the command
hg strip is the command
This extension has to be enabled
Enable the extension by adding the following lines to your .hgrc or Mercurial.ini:
[extensions]
strip =
This option is only suitable if you have access to the central repository where your code is hosted and you have a small group in which you would know if someone have already pulled your changes.
Option 2
Another option would be to backout these 3 commits, Since you are using UI,I will attach a screen shot
Step 1: Right click the unwanted commit and you will see a backout option click that and the wizard wll guide you.
if its a merge that you are trying to backout then you have to select which branch to backout to.
Do the same for the 3 unwanted commits

if you have many commits and if its in a named branch following these steps will provide a solution
1) Close the branch and update to the last good commit you want.
2) Reopen the barch from there by new commit (Named branch can have multiple heads)
3) use hg revert -r and commit
This will make the working directory exactly as the last good commit you need and ignore the inwanted commits. This will only work if the commits are in a named branch.
You can do it like this:
hg backout -r <rev>
hg push
This will backout to the <rev> revision (which should be the last correct commit). In other words, it will set your working directory into the same state as it was on the last correct commit and create a new commit with an explanatory message. Then you'll push it to the public repository so it's the current code again.
I have two branches named X and Y. X is previously created and y is the latest one. Now I am at branch 'Y' and I have modified some files. I need to commit the files which I have modified and I need to commit the changes to 'X' branch instead of 'Y' branch. How can I do this with Mercury Hg or Tortoise Hg? (How to Switch to 'x' branch and commit the changes?)
You could
Commit it to Y branch
Then transplant/grave it to X branch
Then strip changeset from Y branch
As result it's look like you commited it to X instead of Y
If you have not committed the changes then you should be able to do the following:
hg update X
hg commit
Unless you've changed some of the same files in the same places within the file, this should be sufficient. If you have, then your hg update X command should fail. You have a few options at this point.
You can use Mercurial Queues (mq).
You can put your current changes into a patch queue:
hg qnew stufftomove -e
You'll be presented with whatever editor you use to create a commit message. Go ahead and fill in your commit message with whatever you want it to be when it is ultimately committed. If you don't use -e, it will just create the patch queue with no commit message. Later you can make a commit message with hg qrefresh -e if you want.
After the patch queue is created, pop it off with:
hg qpop
Now move to the X branch:
hg update X
Now push the patch queue on. This will apply the patch file:
hg qpush
This can either go on cleanly, or if you did have merge conflicts, you'll get a message that .rej files have been created. Those show you the parts of the changes that could not be applied automatically.
If you have .rej files, manually apply the pieces that didn't work and then run
hg qrefresh
This will update the patch file with the new changes.
When everything looks like what you want it to, you can convert the patch queue to a real commit with
hg qfinish stufftomove
Your file changes should now be committed on the branch you want them to be on.
Alternatively, if you already committed the changes on the wrong branch, and have not pushed your changes (or had them pulled) to a remote repository, you can do this:
hg qimport -r <revision to import>
At this point, continue the above instructions starting with hg qpop.
If you can be more specific about the state of the files and branches, I can help more specifically. In any case, I hope this helps.
Side note: If you've got merge conflicts in the steps above and don't like dealing with .rej files, you can use hg rebase which will allow you to resolve the conflicts in your favorite merge tool (or whatever tool you've got configured). Hope this helps.

While you're on 'Y' branch, put all your changes to shelf. Then switch to 'X' branch and restore changes from your shelf.
We have a master repository located on a separate server. I originally cloned the default branch and made my changes locally. I have locally commited those changes. However, there has been a branch created on the master repository that I would like to push my changes to. Below is the description of my attempt at getting this accomplished.
I have cloned the branch. I am trying to export my changes from local default like so:
C:\hg\default>hg export -g -o mypatch -r tip
and when trying to import them into the clone of the new branch, I get the following:
C:\hg\newBranch>hg import C:\hg\default\mypatch
applying C:\hg\Fill1\mypatch
patching file .hgignore
Hunk #1 FAILED at 11
1 out of 1 hunks FAILED -- saving rejects to file .hgignore.rej
abort: patch failed to apply
I can manually fix the .hgingore.rej file just fine. The problem is that the patch also contains files that were moved. Instead of the files showing as moved, I get the following when running hg status:
C:\hg\newBranch>hg status -C
M someOtherFilesThatLookAsExpected.txt
! originalLocaion\fileA.txt
? newLocation\fileA.txt
This missing and new status is for all files that were moved in the commit contained the applied patch. Am I doing something wrong? Do I always have to manually move files when applying a patch? Is there an easier way to accomplish this branch transfer?
That's a bit difficult to answer without knowing more about your repository structure, but here's how I'd go about it without knowing more. I'm assuming that the reason for the conflict is that there are conflicting changes in the same branch of the repository.
First, get the contents of the newBranch repository:
cd c:\hg\default
hg pull c:\hg\newBranch
Then, either merge or rebase your changes on top. If you are working on the same branch, then just using
hg pull --rebase c:\hg\newBranch
in lieu of the regular pull should do (assuming you have rebasing enabled). Otherwise, do an explicit merge or rebase of the two heads that you need to reconcile. Finally, do:
hg push -r tip c:\hg\newBranch
in order to get your (now reconciled) changes back into newBranch.
Unless you have very specific and unusual requirements, push and pull should be your normal way to sync repositories or part of them (note that using -r will only push/pull the respective branch). Export/import are rather low-level mechanisms that may not give you the benefits of the standard machinery that handles renames, three-way merging logic, etc.
Is it possible to rename 'default' to 'production' in TortoiseHG?
You cannot rename a branch in Mercurial (or TortoiseHg for that matter). What you do instead is to start a new branch called production and base it on the current default branch.
You can do this in TortoiseHg 2.0, where you
Click the row representing the working directory
Click the branch button
Click to open a new branch
Fill in the branch name and click OK
Enter a commit message and click Commit.
This will create a new branch with the name production. The old default branch will remain and you can thus put new features there before merging them into production when they're stable.
You cannot do it directly from the Tortoise2.0+ settings, but through the command-line hg.
As documented in hgbook:
Mercurial lets you assign a persistent name to a branch.
There always exists a branch named default. Even before you start naming branches yourself, you can find traces of the default branch if you look for them.
To start working with named branches, use the hg branches command
$ hg branch production
marked working directory as branch production
$ hg branch
production
Check then if that change is reflected in TortoiseHg
I have a repository, called "my project" based in a framework called "framework". The two of them have each it's repository, unrelated between them, with each branches and tags. I want to receive "framework"'s updates in my repository, but only from "default" branch and not from others. And, of course, I do not want to have "framework"'s tags in my repository, as it is a totally different project.
I have Mercurial HG, and I would like to be able to pull changes from "framework" repository directly from my "Manage repository" page.
Furthermore, I only want to download latest changesets, since I started my project not long ago. And It would be perfect if I could rename the "framework"'s default branch to other name in my repo, e.g. "Framework Changesets".
Note: I do not have write access to the "framework" repository.
I tried to do what mercurial wiki said:
hg pull -f -r default "framework"
It was OK, until I realised I had downloaded all the tags from the "framework" repository, and I had downloaded all the changesets from the remote repository. Furthermore, when in TortoiseHG->Configuration->Synchronization I put the "framework" repository as a remote repository for that project, and pulled from the remote repository, I got all the branches from that repository.
Of course I wasn't able to change default branch name, and updated my default branch, even though I tried to use hg convert --branchmap (but I didn't know how to use it).
Is there any solution to my problem? or even a partial solution?
I think you can address this issue through a combination of these things:
Pulling specific branches
Using the command line: hg pull -r <branch name>
Using TortoiseHg v1.1.X:
Check for incoming changesets by using the button labeled Download and view incoming changesets
Right-click on the tip of the branch you want to pull and select Pull to here
Reject the rest of the changesets using the Reject button
Removing existing tags
You can always hand-edit the .hgtags file to remove tags created on the "framework" branch, but I don't know of a way to pull changesets without the tags.
Changing branch name
Using the mq extension you can change the named branch that your new "framework" changesets live on. See answer to "Apply patches in branch" for instructions on how to do this in TortoiseHg v1.1.X, as well as the CLI. The basic idea here is to create a named branch with the name you want, import all of the "framework" changesets you pulled into a patch queue, and then apply them to the new named branch. They will shed the branch name from "framework" and use the branch name of the branch you applied them to.
If you are going to pull from "framework" more than once, you would need to use the patch queue to move only the new changesets with each pull. It should be easy to see which changesets you haven't moved yet.
We can specify the branch name by appending branch name with a # symbol in the clone url.
e.g.
hg clone --verbose https://user#cloneurl/my_product#MY_BRANCH "C:\myCode"
