I am passing a unique ID as parameter in SSRS report. In the source table, unique id does not contain dashed. However, the user may insert Unique ID including dashes "-" and in some cases without dashes. Is there a way that we could remove dashes from the parameter.
For example, unique id 3120-20268-8 is stored in table as 3120202688. How I could retrieve if user pass multiple values with or without dashes in the SSRS Report.
When is used below query, it gives record against single value only. However, gives error when more than one values are provided.
select * from Table
where Unique_ID in (REPLACE(#Unique_ID,'-',''))
For more than 1 values, it gives errors mentioned below:
The replace function requires 3 argument(s).
Query execution failed for dataset 'ATL_List'.
Thanks
One of the simplest mechanisms for this is to create an expression based parameter to hold the sanitised input. This parameter would be hidden so the user is not aware of it, but the rest of the usage of the parameter is the same.
NOTE: You could do something similar with a query based default value, but this case is easier to do via a simple expression
Single Value Parameter
Create a new parameter:
set it to hidden
Set the default value expression:
=Str(Parameters!inputID.Value).Replace("-","")
Multi-Value Parameter
This is only slightly trickier, in the expression we can join the selected values together into a CSV string, then process that value and then split it back:
Set the parameter to multi-value, but still hidden:
Set the default value expression:
=Join(Parameters!inputID.Value,",").Replace("-","").Split(",")
Without going to detailed, if we made the sanitised parameter temporarily visible, just to demonstrate the conversion, it should look like this:
The parameter MUST be hidden!
NOTE: DO NOT make your sanitised parameter visible as in the above screenshot in your deployed report! Doing so will mean that it will not pickup changes made to the input value after it has rendered the first time.
remember that we have exploited the default value, we haven't arbitrarily defined en expression to always execute.
The output when the parameter is hidden is calculated when the report is rendered, it's just harder to visualise the behavior in this static post:
In your DataSet query you would just use the sanitised parameter:
SELECT * FROM Table WHERE Unique_ID IN (#sanitisedMultiValue)
You should be able to use the replace function in your report to format the parameter value after it has been entered, something like the below
replace(Fields!Paramater.Value,"-","")=FieldinYourTable

I am using Visual Studios 2015 with SSDT installed. I cannot show my query as it has confidential columns in it. Let's just say I have two temporary tables that gather general data which are joined in the select statement and uses a where clause that accepts a multi-value parameter of text datatype (column is char(8)) to filter the information in the report. I have checked allow multiple values in the parameter properties. There are no available values, the user types the values in. (I've also tried supplying values in drop down list with same results).
Where smpl_lvl_cd in (#SampleLevel)
I would think this is quite simple and when the user selects one value, everything works well. As soon as you choose more than one value, you get the error "An expression of non-Boolean type specified in a context where a condition is expected, near ','."
For example: Sample Levels 'Q' and 'V' are selected. The way I understand it, SSRS send 'Q,V' to the query. (Or does it send "Q,V,'?) With this in mind, I've tried using:
Where smpl_lvl_cd in (select value from string_split(#SampeLevel, ','))
with similar results "Procedure or function string_split has too many arguments specified....." followed by the same Boolean message.
This parameter is not being sent to a stored procedure but I've tried using the join function on the parameter in combination with the string_split in the query. I end up getting no data for more than one selection.
Please help.
See this article: SSRS multi-value parameter using a stored procedure. You have to change your multi-valued parameter array into a string before sending into your dataset. therefore send the expression =Join(SampeLevel!Value,",") instead of [#SampeLevel]
I'm trying to pass a report variable to an expression used to populate textbox but it's giving me syntax error. Here's the expression.
=Fields!Variables!col1.Value.Value
The variable (Variables!col1.Value) should return a fieldname that I want to use to populate a textbox inside a table.
Edit:
Basically I have a multi-value parameter that passes on to a stored procedure that pulls the data based on the parameter value. The first 4-5 columns returned are static while the rest are dynamic and can have unknown number of columns but I do know the max number of columns.
What I'm trying to do is to create a fixed number of columns and then show/hide them based on the parameter. I get the column title via an expression (=Parameters!Course_IDs.Label(0)) and then I want to use this value to create a textbox that will populate the column based on this value Course_IDs.Label(0).
Since it is a multi-valued parameter, you will likely need to join the results:
=JOIN(Parameters!ParameterName.Value, ", ")
If it is a variable from the dataset you will likely need to use LOOKUPSET() to get the values.
Also note that parameter values might be ugly to look at. In that case use the name instead - Parameters!ParameterName.Label
I'm trying to create an expression with a missing column. as in the column is not returned from the query but does exist in the list of fields.
The problem I'm having is that every time I do an expression and one of the parameters is from a field that doesn't have a return from query the query fails silently. the following example is looking at a field "test" that, as I said, exists in the list of fields but is not returned from the query, how can I have this is statement send "alert"??
=IIF(Fields!test.IsMissing,"alert",Fields!test.Value)
The reason that I don't return the field is that the columns are dependent on the parameters I enter in the procedure (so they could be used or not depending on what the user is asking)
Thank you
From reading your question I think, you have dynamic columns which will be returns conditionally
So what you should do is,
1) Create the parameter in the parameter list and set it as the internal and assign the field value to that parameter, suppose the parameter is dyanmicfiledvalue
2) Change your expression as,
=IIF(IsNothing(Parameters!dyanmicfiledvalue.value),"alert", Parameters!dyanmicfiledvalue.value )
that should do it. Let me know in case of issues.
Or if you want to check null or empty value for that column just change as
=IIF(IsNothing(Fields!test.value),"alert",Fields!test.value)
I have to set the start_date of my report depending of a report parameter. The time stamps are calculated in a database query.
My expression looks like this:
=SWITCH (
Parameters!report_type.Value = 1,First(Fields!daily_start.Value, "Timestamps")
,Parameters!report_type.Value = 2,First(Fields!weekly_start.Value, "Timestamps")
,Parameters!report_type.Value = 3,First(Fields!monthly_start.Value, "Timestamps")
)
Unfortunately I get the error message:
A value expression used for the report parameter 'time_from' refers to a field. Fields cannot be used in report parameter expression
I know, that this is not allowed because SSRS cannot be sure in which order datasets are called. But I think this is not dangerous.
All time stamps are received by query without parameter. The parameter report_type is selected by a user before the report will be generated.
Can someone give me a hint for a workaround?
Here's the workaround - get the value using SQL.
Create a new Dataset called StartDates:
SELECT CASE
WHEN #report_type = 1 THEN daily_start
WHEN #report_type = 2 THEN weekly_start
WHEN #report_type = 3 THEN monthly_start
END AS StartDate
FROM MyTable
You already have the #report_type and #time_from parameters. With the #time_from parameter, set its Default Values to Get values from a query using the StartDates dataset and the Value field StartDate.
Now, you'd think this might be enough to make it work - you're referencing this query as the default value and as you change the #report_type parameter the other parameters refresh, but the first date in the #time_from parameter never changes. That's because the refresh happens on the Available Values query, not on the Default Values query.
So you also need to wire up the Available Values query to the StartDates query. Now your query will fire on the change of #report_type and the default value will be set to the appropriate date for your selection.
I switched from a query to Stored Procedure and was getting this error. Things I tried:
Ensured I had sufficient permission on the database (you need EXEC rights or DBO to run teh sproc)
Delete the existing parameters (and then use refresh fields to refresh/get the correctly named ones back)
Remove the square brackets around the stored procedure if you've specified that
Sometimes, Expressions can get a bit verbose. I have created a Report Code Function and then used that as the Parameter Value.
For example, I created a Code function called "CalculateDateSet" and then set the Report Parameter to this expression:
"=Code.CalculateDateSet(Parameters!Month.Value, Parameters!Year.Value"
Customer wants me to repeat the parameter values in the page header of the report. But if they just choose "Select All" on a multi-valued parameter, they want the text "Any" listed.
For example, one parameter has a fixed set of 9 values. I hard-coded the expression for a text box to:
="Room Size: " &
iif(Parameters!pRoomCap.Count=9,
"Any",
Join(Parameters!pRoomCap.Value, ", "))
How can I do this if the parameter source is a query of unknown size?
Try this out. You need to compare the total number of parameters in the dataset to the count of selected parameters. The following assumes that your multivalue parameter is using a dataset called "dsRoomSizes"
="Room Size: "
& iif(Parameters!pRoomCap.Count = count(Fields!pRoomCap.Value,"dsRoomSizes"),
"Any",
Join(Parameters!pRoomCap.Value, ", "))
This expression will work in the page header/footer.
UPDATE
In the interests of finding a solution to your problem, the following should work for you. It feels hackish and I encourage you to keep research alternative methods but this will work:
Create a second multivalue parameter and name it something like "pRoomCap_hidden".
The source of the parameter is the exact same query
In the parameter properties, setting the default values to the same query
Important: Set the parameter visibility to hidden
This will create a second multivalue parameter in your report that is exactly the same as your initial multivalue parameter only this parameter list will have all values selected by default.
Enter the following expression in a textbox in your header:
=IIF(Parameters!pRoomCap.Count = Parameters!pRoomCap_hidden.Count,"All",Join(Parameters!ReportParameter1.Value,", "))
The above will compare the selected values in each parameter list. If the lists contain the same selected values then that indicates that "All" have been selected in the first list.
Like I said, it is hackish but it definitely works. Until you are upgraded to 2008, this might not be a bad workaround for you.
Can you compare the count of the parameter to the count of the dataset you pull the parameter values from?
I unioned my dataset for the parameters with one which I created manually with a "select" statement - I was then able to force the value to be something like -1 or null.
Then simply check if the parameter contains -1 or null and replace the value in the header with the replacement text.
BTW- I am now using SSRS 2008 R2 and this solution worked for me. My report uses three datasets; but only one in the tabilx that I needed to hide a row in. After long hours of searching and many, many, many unhelpful for wrong answers; the solution of creating a identical parameter only hidden (I marked it as internal) and then comparing to the exposed one is brilliant and easy.
Thank you very much!
