Specific columns - html

I've been doing some stuff with HTML and I need to have a few columns. I know how to make them and the basics of how they work. However, there is a certain problem that I have. I need to have 3 columns that have an image on top, then text on bottom. However, the text on bottom can't flow into the next column if the browser is resized - it just needs to go up or down. What I have so far:
body {
background-color: white;
font-family: times, serif;
color: black;
}
div {
display: flex;
margin: 50px;
flex-wrap: wrap;
}
<div>
<div class="first">
<img src="Images/australia_flag.jpg" alt="Australian Flag" title="Australian Flag" height="200" width="300"> text as well </div>
<div class="second">
<img src="Images/brazil_flag.jpg" alt="Brazilian Flag" title="Brazilian Flag"> even more text </div>
<div class="third">
<img src="Images/china_flag.jpg" alt="Chinese Flag" title="Chinese Flag" height="200" width="300"> text again
</div>
</div>

not entirely sure if you mean columns or rows? Based on your code, it looks like rows. If that's the case, I'm not sure what you mean by "flow into the next column"? You might check out the relative and absolute values for CSS position.
If, in fact, you do actually mean columns, I'd strongly advise using Bootstrap's Grid System. This is great for creating responsive columns.

Please take a look at this simple 3 column layout with a full width content area on top and bottom here: https://jsfiddle.net/7drfva0o/2/
.top, .bottom {
width:98%;
padding:1%;
background-color: red;
clear:both;
}
.cols {
width:31%;
padding:1%;
float:left;
background-color:blue;
border: 1px solid #FFF;
}
Is that what you're looking for?

First, you'll need to improve your markup: having images and texts as DOM node to be "flexed"
HTML markup improved
<div class="wrapper">
<div class="column">
<img src="..." />
<p>text</p>
</div>
<div class="column">
<img src="..." />
<p>text</p>
</div>
<div class="column">
<img src="..." />
<p>text</p>
</div>
</div>
Then, each of your div is going to have display: flex + flex-direction: column to allow the image going on top and the text going below. You will be able to adjust margin or whatever. At the minimum, I'd go like this:
CSS improved
.wrapper {
display: flex;
}
.column {
margin: 5px;
display: flex;
flex-direction: column;
}
Wrapped altogether, here is a snippet of what I think you're trying to achieve
Snippet
.wrapper {
display: flex;
}
.column {
margin: 5px;
display: flex;
flex-direction: column;
}
<div class="wrapper">
<div class="column">
<img src="http://fakeimg.pl/300x200" />
<p>text as well</p>
</div>
<div class="column">
<img src="http://fakeimg.pl/300x200" />
<p>text as well</p>
</div>
<div class="column">
<img src="http://fakeimg.pl/300x200" />
<p>text as well</p>
</div>
</div>
Then, feel free to play with flexbox properties to align, wrap, adjust alignments, etc. Great documentation on CSS-Tricks : https://css-tricks.com/snippets/css/a-guide-to-flexbox/

Changing <div> to <a> messing up my styles

I was stay far from coding for a very long time but today I start to do some code, and have fun with html and styling, lol. My goal was to create a simple card gallery which is very simple and every 6 year old child can do in a few lines of some css and html. As you can see I failed and ended up here in stackoverflow looking for some help.
The problem accured when I tried to change my div card into an a link, back in the days it worked well as I can remember. Since there was an premade class with styles, you simply changed the tag and everything was well, except you should change colors on that a may be. But today when I did it, my card... it just messed up... I got really confused. I also tried some different approaches, for example wrap the div into a and it looks wierd too. So the main questions are:
Why everyting is messed up, when simply change tag to a from div (we have premade css class!)? But the card is like became divided into 2 parts...
When I tried to wrapped div card with a. In my DOM I can see that this a is like duplicate itself inside DOM on every element inside itself.
Can anyone explain what is going on here and what is a good approach nowadays?

display: flex;
justify-content: center;

Aligning divs and images vertically

I have a couple of images
mockleft.png - 1228x500px
mockright.png - 1825x335px
My code is as below..
<head>
<link href="css/bootstrap.min.css" rel="stylesheet">
</head>
<body id="home">
<div class="intro">
<div class="row">
<div class="col-xs-5" style="background-color:blue">
<img src="img/mockleft.png" alt="logo" style="width:100%;">
</div>
<div class="col-xs-1"></div>
<div class="col-xs-6" style="background-color:red;">
<img src="img/mockright.png" alt="logo" style="width:100%;">
</div>
</div>
</div>
</body>
The output is as below..
I wish for two things..
a) The left div with blue background should be same height as right div with red background and vice versa.
b)Once the right div with red background becomes same size with the left one, I want the mockright.png image to be vertically aligned at bottom of the right div.
I tried the vertical-align css to both the div as well as image without success.
All help is sincerely appreciated
Thanks
You could do it with flexbox. If you use Bootstrap 4 as #Pete suggests in the comments, you could achieve the same, since it uses flexbox.
JSFiddle Demo
.row {
display: flex;
}
.col-xs-1 {
width: 10%;
}
.col-xs-5 {
display: flex;
flex-direction: column;
width: 40%;
background: blue;
justify-content: flex-end;
}
.col-xs-6 {
width: 50%;
background: red;
}
<div class="row">
<div class="col-xs-5">
<img src="https://placekitten.com/600/400" alt="logo" style="width:100%;">
</div>
<div class="col-xs-1"></div>
<div class="col-xs-6">
<img src="https://placekitten.com/600/400" alt="logo" style="width:100%;">
</div>
</div>
a) Assuming you need to use Bootstrap 3, what you can do is use one of the options provided to make the columns the same height:
How can I make Bootstrap columns all the same height?
b) For that part, use auto margin:
<img src="img/mockright.png" alt="logo" style="width:100%; margin-top: auto;">
Hope it helps :)

Why is flexbox creating unused space below my content?

I have some slides where I'm trying to equally space content using display: flex but it's adding a large empty area below my content and above the navigation.
When the screen shrinks to the mobile size the empty area becomes much more apparent.
I have no idea why it's doing this, or why switching display: flex to display:table messes things up even more.
After spending two days I've come for some guidance.
Here's a test link to what I have. Click on 1 - 4 to get to a screen using flex.
<div class="slide" id="slide-one" data-slide="1">
<p class="deck">You don’t have to wait until bad weather is imminent to prepare for a power outage. Take some time to get organized with these tips.</p>
<div class="row">
<div class="section" id="emergency-kit">
<div class="rollover center">
<div class="button-container">
<div class="button"></div>
</div>
<div class="text">Create an Emergency Kit</div>
</div>
<div class="container">
<img src="img/emergency-kit.png" alt="" />
</div>
</div>
<div class="section" id="food-prep">
<div class="rollover center">
<div class="button-container">
<div class="button"></div>
</div>
<div class="text">Prep Your Food</div>
</div>
<div class="container">
<img src="img/fridge.png" alt="" />
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
.row {
display: flex;
width:100%;
flex-direction: row;
margin-top: 20px;
}
#emergency-kit {
width:40%;
display: inline-block;
.container {
max-width: 263px;
}
}
#food-prep {
width:40%;
display: inline-block;
.container {
max-width: 167px;
}
}
Also, using flexslider for the slideshow animations.
The source of the gap has nothing to do with flexbox. Your flex container (.row) is nested within a larger container.
div.row
... is a descendant of div.flex-viewport
... which takes up all the height to the bottom navbar.
On the smaller screen, div.row isn't even a flex container anymore. It's switched to a block element:
Possible options for closing the gap:
Reduce the height of one of the containers
Define heights for all container elements between .flex-viewport and .row
Apply display: flex to all containers, so children can expand the full height of their parent

Why does these inline-block element produce extra width?

This is a follow up from this question: Autofit text under image with only css
Why does the inline-block divs in this code produce extra width on the right side of the elements?
.item {
display: inline-block;
background-color: red;
}
.image-container {
background-color: blue;
display: table;
width: 1%;
}
img {
height: 120px;
}
.text-wrapper {
overflow: hidden;
}
<div class="item">
<div class='image-container'>
<img src='http://i.imgur.com/nV2qBpe.jpg' class="image">
<div class='text-wrapper'>
<p class='text'>Some text that may need to wrap into multiple lines</p>
</div>
</div>
</div>
<div class="item">
<div class='image-container'>
<img src='http://i.imgur.com/nV2qBpe.jpg' class="image">
<div class='text-wrapper'>
<p class='text'>Some text that may need to wrap into multiple lines</p>
</div>
</div>
</div>
<div class="item">
<div class='image-container'>
<img src='http://i.imgur.com/nV2qBpe.jpg' class="image">
<div class='text-wrapper'>
<p class='text'>Some text that may need to wrap into multiple lines</p>
</div>
</div>
</div>
<div class="item">
<div class='image-container'>
<img src='http://i.imgur.com/nV2qBpe.jpg' class="image">
<div class='text-wrapper'>
<p class='text'>Some text that may need to wrap into multiple lines</p>
</div>
</div>
</div>
Edit: This is NOT a problem with whitespace, see this jsfiddle without any whitespace and notice that the div still takes up lots of extra space (the red area): https://jsfiddle.net/2Lzo9vfc/332/
Edit2: To clarify my requirements: I have N images with varying width that I wish to layout in a "dynamic table", i.e. the images should be inline so they will automatically wrap when running out of horizontal space in parent. Where this gets tricky is that I have some text that I wish to display under each image that should wrap with the image width as well (and as I said, the image width may vary).
The red portion of the item is an artifact of the browser not knowing how to correctly size the containers. It's using the length of the text to determine the width before the table layout is applied. If you know the width of the items, you can use this simpler approach:
.item {
display: inline-block;
background-color: blue;
width: 120px;
}
.image {
display: block;
height: 120px;
}
<div class="item">
<img src='http://i.imgur.com/nV2qBpe.jpg' class="image">
<p class='text'>Some text that may need to wrap into multiple lines</p>
</div>
<div class="item">
<img src='http://i.imgur.com/nV2qBpe.jpg' class="image">
<p class='text'>Some text that may need to wrap into multiple lines</p>
</div>
<div class="item">
<img src='http://i.imgur.com/nV2qBpe.jpg' class="image">
<p class='text'>Some text that may need to wrap into multiple lines</p>
</div>
<div class="item">
<img src='http://i.imgur.com/nV2qBpe.jpg' class="image">
<p class='text'>Some text that may need to wrap into multiple lines</p>
</div>
I don't know off hand of a way to make the elements shrink to the smallest possible width while still containing all child elements.
I modified #Brandon Gano's second answer. I used display: table-caption; on .text-wrapper.
Here's the CSS I modified from his jsfiddle:
.text-wrapper {
overflow: hidden;
display: table-caption;
caption-side: bottom;
height: 60px; /* You may have to modify the height */
background-color: blue;
}
And the updated jsfiddle.
You're seeing whitespace added between the inline-block elements. You can remove the horizontal space between these items by removing all whitespace between the elements. e.g.:
<div>
...
</div><div>
...
</div><div>
...
</div>
Note that the closing tag is immediately followed by the next opening tag.

Centering 2 images with label in a row in Bootstrap

The goal is that I want both images to have be side by side and centered in the middle of the row.
I tried to do that via adjusting the columns of the row
The problem is that even with trying to center via rows, it always looks a little off center and if I change the max-width to be a little bigger, the images are no longer side by side and are on top of one another
The height and width of the images are...
graft1/graft2 - height="333" width="500"
ivan1/ivan2 - height="542" width="400"
Here is my HTML
<section class="wrapper style1">
<div class="container">
<div id="content">
<!-- Content -->
<article>
<header>
<h2>Before and After</h2>
</header>
<div class="row">
<div class="div_baPics">
<img id="graft1" class="baPics" src="images/graft1.jpg" alt="">
<label for="graft1">Before</label>
<img id="graft2" class="baPics" src="images/graft2.jpg" alt="">
<label for="graft2">After</label>
</div>
</div>
<div class="row">
<div class="div_baPics">
<img id="ivan1" class="baPics" src="images/ivan1.jpg" alt="">
<label for="ivan1">Before</label>
<img id="ivan2" class="baPics" src="images/ivan2.jpg" alt="">
<label for="ivan2">After</label>
</div>
</div>
</article>
</div>
</div>
</section>
And here is the CSS for baPics
.baPics {
max-width: 30%;
}
.div_baPics {
text-align: center;
}
Since you're using Bootstrap, I went with its system. See this fiddle :
http://jsfiddle.net/Bladepianist/55gyp94n/
Well, i did use real image so that you could see the result but with that (when I tested anyway), your image should resize, following the screen.
.thumbnail {
border: none;
}
This code isn't needed, unless you don't want the border of the thumbnail ;).
Hope it will satisfy you and if that's the case, thumbs up :p.
You need to wrap img and corresponding label in a wrapper, like so:
/*Just to make a difference between pics*/
body {
background: grey;
}
/*Minimal CSS*/
.div_baPics {
text-align: center; /*Center alignment for the wrapper*/
font-size: 0; /*To remove the white space between pics*/
}
.pic {
display: inline-block;
}
.pic img {
display: block;
/*This should be set by default by Bootstrap*/
max-width: 100%;
height: auto;
}
.pic label {
display: block;
font-size: 16px; /*Or whatever font-size you use*/
}
<div class="div_baPics">
<div class="pic">
<img src="http://i.imgur.com/zNTWaR3.jpg" />
<label>Pic 1</label>
</div>
<div class="pic">
<img src="http://i.imgur.com/IqiJN2f.png" />
<label>Pic 2</label>
</div>
</div>
