Why does my nav bar affect the centering of my image? - html

If I have no nav bar, then my image is centred fine.
If I then add my nav bar (using an unordered list horizontal list) then my image is aligned more to the left of the page.
It's just a basic layout
<div>
<img ...>
<ul>....</ul>
</div>
Here is the full code (it isn't much, but it's still too much to post on here)
https://jsfiddle.net/ps84wbx0/
Unfortunately I can't add the image but I'm sure the case is the same for any image.
This is the page I am trying to create
Here's a snippet:
/* Logo Styling */
div.homepage {
position: fixed;
left: 50%;
}
img.homepage {
position: relative;
left: -50%;
}
/*Nav Bar Styling*/
ul {
list-style-type: none;
margin-left: -50%;
}
li.button {
display: inline-block;
margin: 0 1em 1em 0;
padding: 0 4em;
font: 300 1.5em/3em 'Open Sans', sans-serif;
letter-spacing: .08em;
color: #fff;
background: #0090C0;
border-radius: 2px;
}
li.button:hover{
background: #007DA7;
box-shadow: 0 0 3px rgba(black, .5) inset;
}
a:link, a:hover, a:active, a:visited {
text-decoration: none;
color: inherit;
}
<div class="homepage">
<img src="images/homepage.png" class="homepage">
<ul>
<li class="button">Home</li>
<li class="button">About</li>
<li class="button">Services</li>
<li class="button">Contact</li>
</ul>
</div>

There are multiple ways to solve this, but I think this one is one of the simplest. I've only changed the CSS of div.homepage, img.homepage and ul. Here's the code:
/* Logo Styling */
div.homepage {
position: fixed;
text-align: center;
margin: 0 auto;
left: 0;
right: 0;
}
img.homepage {
position: relative;
}
/*Nav Bar Styling*/
ul {
list-style-type: none;
}
li.button {
display: inline-block;
margin: 0 1em 1em 0;
padding: 0 4em;
font: 300 1.5em/3em 'Open Sans', sans-serif;
letter-spacing: .08em;
color: #fff;
background: #0090C0;
border-radius: 2px;
}
li.button:hover{
background: #007DA7;
box-shadow: 0 0 3px rgba(black, .5) inset;
}
a:link, a:hover, a:active, a:visited {
text-decoration: none;
color: inherit;
}
<div class="homepage">
<img src="images/homepage.png" class="homepage">
<ul>
<li class="button">Home</li>
<li class="button">About</li>
<li class="button">Services</li>
<li class="button">Contact</li>
</ul>
</div>

Problems with horizontal nav bar

I am working on a horizontal navigation bar with a dropdown menu. I'm quite new to making codes so this is maybe a stupid question. My navigation is sticking to the left of my website, but I need it to stay in line with the text and I can't get the navigation bar threw my whole webpage how do I fix this?
photo of my website with the 2 problems:
enter image description here
nav {
position: absolute;
}
.horizontal {
list-style-type: none;
margin: 40 auto;
width: 640px;
padding: 0;
overflow: hidden;
}
.horizontal>li {
float: left;
}
.horizontal li ul {
display: none;
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
list-style: none;
position: relative;
width: 100%;
}
.horizontal li:hover ul {
display: inline-block;
}
.horizontal li a {
display: block;
text-decoration: none;
text-align: center;
padding: 22px 10px;
font-family: arial;
font-size: 8pt;
font-weight: bold;
color: #FFFFFF;
text-transform: uppercase;
border-right: 1px solid #607987;
background-color: #006600;
letter-spacing: .08em;
width: 70px;
}
.horizontal li a:hover {
background-color: darkorange;
color: #a2becf
}
.horizontal li:first-child a {
border-left: 0;
}
.horizontal li:last-child a {
border-right: 0;
}
h1 {
margin-top: 80px;
}
<nav id="mainnav">
<ul class="horizontal">
<li>Home</li>
<li>Planning</li>
<li>Takken
<ul>
<li>Kapoenen</li>
<li>Kawellen</li>
<li>Kajoo's</li>
<li>Jojoo's</li>
<li>Givers</li>
<li>Jin</li>
<li>Akabe</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Kleding</li>
<li>Contact
<ul>
<li>Leiding</li>
<li>Verhuur</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Inschrijven</li>
</ul>
</nav>
Two things in your css are giving you trouble.
nav{ position: absolute; } means this div will not fill the width.
horizontal{ margin: 40 auto;} 40 is not valid.
You MUST specify a measurement unit in CSS, so it should be 40px if I'm guessing your intention, but other units are available.
Here is amended css you can try.
nav {
width: 100%;
background-color: #006600;
}
.horizontal {
list-style-type: none;
margin: 40px auto;
width: 640px;
padding: 0;
overflow: hidden;
}
Step 1) Add HTML:
Example
<!-- The navigation menu -->
<div class="navbar">
<a class="active" href="#">Home</a>
Planning
Takken
Kleding
Contact
Inschrijven
</div>
And CSS:
.navbar {
width: 100%;
background-color: #555;
overflow: auto;
}
.navbar a {
float: left;
padding: 12px;
color: white;
text-decoration: none;
font-size: 17px;
width: 15%;; /* Four links of equal widths */
text-align: center;
}

CSS Dropdown menu not working?

I've been following this video online on how to create dropdown menu using css. I followed it and there's no any signs of a dropdown menu on my website. It's so frustrating because i want to get over with it so i can focus now on backend dev. Hope you guys can figure this one out.

Add this to your CSS :
It will help you to have the result you want. Of course there are still adaptations to do regarding your preferences.
/* Without this line, the submenu elements are black on black background */
#nav_menu .sub-menu li a {
color: #fff;
}
/* With this line you will remove the opacity:0; of the submenu when you hover the parent li */
#nav_menu li:hover .sub-menu {
opacity: 1;
}
/* Don't set a width so you have a better output */
#nav_menu li .sub-menu {
width: auto;
}
/* This lines make the submenu li dislay verticaly and not inline */
#nav_menu li .sub-menu li {
display: block;
}
Edit:
Instead of changing the opacity property to show/hide the submenu, you should use the display property.
Currently, the submenu is just transparent, but always opened. If your menu were bigger in height, you could open it by hovering the mouse on the slide at the location where it is when opened.
By using the display property, you're actually hiding it, and it will be opened only if you hover the menu element (as it should be).
To do this, you have to replace the opacity: 0; in your .sub-menu class by : display: none;
Then change the code opacity: 1; in the #nav_menu li:hover .sub-menu by : display: block; (in the code I gave you before).
It will be cleaner than handling it with the opacity.

Having an offset link on a nav that still functions with the nav

I have a standard nav that I want center aligned like so:
body {
background: silver;
}
nav {
text-align: center;
padding: 3px 0;
margin: 5px 0 0 5px;
}
nav ul {
list-style: none;
margin: 0 30px;
padding: 2px 20px 0 0;
position: relative;
}
nav li {
display: inline-block;
font-size: 1.5em;
}
nav a {
font-weight: 800;
color: #fff;
padding: 2px 10px 2px;
text-transform: uppercase;
text-decoration: none;
}
nav a:active {
color: #00A2E0;
}
nav a {
color: #fff;
}
nav a.selected,
nav a:hover {
color: #23c3ff;
}
<nav>
<ul>
<li>Portfolio</li>
<li>About</li>
<li>Resume</li>
<li>Contact</li>
</ul>
</nav>
The code works just fine in all window sizes. But I want another list item, feed, on the nav that attaches itself to the same behavior as the rest of the list items, but is spaced to the right of Portfolio, about, resume and contact. So:
Portfolio About Resume Contact Feed
Since my nav is set to center, if I add Feed to nav and float the single list item, the wntire list will align center with feed attached and will look out of center. In other words, I still want the first 4 items in the list to align center, feed to be floated to the right, but also want feed to move with the list as the screen sizes down.
Giving feed sbsolute positioning works in a maximum window, but when the screen size becomes smaller then feed will eventually overlap the rest of the nav elements.
I also tried:
body {
background: silver;
}
nav {
text-align: center;
padding: 3px 0;
margin: 5px 0 0 5px;
}
.clearfix {
*zoom: 1;
}
.clearfix:before,
.clearfix:after {
display: table;
line-height: 0;
content: "";
}
.clearfix:after {
clear: both;
}
.feed {
float: right;
right: 20px;
z-index: 30;
}
/*
#feed{
position: absolute;
right: 40px;
}*/
nav ul {
list-style: none;
margin: 0 30px;
padding: 2px 20px 0 0;
position: relative;
}
nav li {
display: inline-block;
font-size: 1.5em;
}
nav a {
font-weight: 800;
color: #fff;
padding: 2px 10px 2px;
text-transform: uppercase;
text-decoration: none;
}
nav a:active {
color: #00A2E0;
}
nav a {
color: #fff;
}
nav a.selected,
nav a:hover {
color: #23c3ff;
}
<nav class="clearfix">
<div class="feed">
<ul>
<li>feed</li>
</ul>
</div>
<ul>
<li>Portfolio</li>
<li>About</li>
<li>Resume</li>
<li>Contact</li>
<!-- <li id = "feed">bucket feed</li> -->
</ul>
</nav>
and that works the best, but the div associated with feed only allows me to click it (the associated anchor link it seems) in a 1 pixel opening right below the text itself. The rest seems to be overlap from the ul and the nav which is 'covering' the rest of the clickable area. Sorry for the lengthy post, but thanks for any help you might have!
I would use media queries to do it, set up a reasonable breaking point, and change the absolute positioned Feed item back to static.

CSS - Dropdown menu child item drags the whole style one level down

I have on main Menu that works totally fine without child menu items.
But now i have to add additional items and wanted to do a drop down Menu.
The Menu item "Services" is parent of "test" there should be a clean line, but when opening "Services" the border of the whole menu expands with "test" there should only be a small border the same length as "Services" surrounding "test".
For this to work i have to edit "current active deeper parent" or "nav-child unstyled small" if i'm correctly.
If possible you should even only need to hover over "Services" to trigger the dropdown menu.
.flowmenu {
background: none repeat scroll 0 0 #333333;
padding-left: 0px;
position: relative;
}
.flowmenu li {
display: inline-block;
list-style: none outside none;
padding: 0;
}
.flowmenu ul li {
position: relative;
}
.flowmenu li > a {
background: none repeat scroll 0 0 rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);
border-color: #000000;
border-style: solid;
border-width: 0 1px 0 0;
box-shadow: 1px 0 0 0 #555555;
margin-bottom: 0;
padding: 5px 15px;
text-transform: uppercase;
color: #FFFFFF;
cursor: pointer;
display: block;
font-family: 'Corbel', sans-serif;
font-size: 12px;
font-weight: normal;
line-height: 30px;
text-decoration: none;
}
.flowmenu li.active {
background: #222222;
}
<div class="navfix">
<ul class="nav menu flowmenu li">
<li class="item-435">Home
</li>
<li class="item-485">Communication
</li>
<li class="item-486 current active deeper parent">Services
<ul class="nav-child unstyled small">
<li class="item-579">Test
</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li class="item-487">Languages
</li>
<li class="item-488">Network
</li>
</ul>
</div>
The parent list item of the <ul> has to be position relative if you want a dropdown menu
the <ul> it self can be position absolute so it appears nicely under the parent. I made a jsFIDDLE
Most important changes:
.flowmenu > li {
position:relative;
display: inline-block;
list-style: none outside none;
padding: 0;
}
.flowmenu ul {
position: absolute;
display:block; /* or none */
width:100%;
background: #222222;
list-style:none;
margin:0;
padding:0;
}
Hope this helps! I didn't completly styled the dropdown maybe it's better to do that yourself
.flowmenu {

The problem is - all my navigation buttons are stacked up ontop of each other, not on a row. What am I doing wrong?
Instead of making them divs, use anchor tags inside lists. Here's the image and the complete working code for you:
<html>
<head>
<style>
body
{
background-color: #666;
}
.font_title
{
font-family: "Segoe UI";
font-weight: bold;
font-size: 60px;
text-align: center;
}
#title
{
width: 800px;
}
#container
{
position: relative;
margin: auto;
width: 800px;
height: 995px;
background-color: #CCCCCC;
}
#navigation_holder
{
position: relative;
margin: auto;
width: 800px;
}
.navigation_button
{
font-family: "Segoe UI";
text-align: center;
font-size: 26px;
width: 200px;
height: 40px;
background-color: #09C;
}
.navigation_button:hover
{
background-color: #09F;
}
ul
{
list-style-type:none;
margin:0;
padding:0;
overflow:hidden;
}
li
{
float:left;
}
a:link,a:visited
{
display:block;
width:200px;
font-family: "Segoe UI";
text-align: center;
font-size: 26px;
width: 200px;
height: 40px;
background-color: #09C;
}
a:hover,a:active
{
background-color: #09F;
}
</style>
</head>
<body>
<div id="container"> <!-- The main container -->
<div class="font_title", id="title"> Our Site</div>
<div id="navigation_holder">
<ul>
<li id="navigation_button_1" > Home </li>
<li id="navigation_button_2" > About </li>
<li id="navigation_button_3" > Services </li>
<li id="navigation_button_4" > Contact </li>
</ul>
</div>
<!-- More DIVs in the container -->
</div>
</body>
</html>
The problem is that divs are block elements, thus they naturally position themselves on top of each other. You can use several methods to get them to behave. Applying a display: inline-block to your .navigation_button class is what I would prefer in most cases. In this case, however, a float: left will work just as well.
The two methods have their benefits and drawbacks, but floats can become problematic because they essentially become unrecognizable to non-floated elements (in the same way position: absolute does).
As an aside, if I were you, I'd pull the height off your container, change #navigation_holder to a <nav>, and perhaps even pull the ids (and possibly even the classes!) off of your individual navigation elements. Heck, you could even take out the inner divs entirely, and replace them with a ul whose li were display: inline (it would be more semantic).
You could then reference them like this:
.navigation_holder ul li {
display: inline;
padding-left: 40px; /* or whatever */
}
And if you need to target only the first or last:
.navigation_holder ul li:first-of-type {
// styles
}
.navigation_holder ul li:last-of-type {
// styles
}
To pop the default styles off the ul:
.navigation_holder ul {
list-style-type: none;
}
A reply to your question, and a question to your question...
What are you looking for?
Here are 3 examples:
1 Providing you wanted a normal left hand horizontal inline-list you would do:
HTML
<div id="navigation_holder">
<ul>
<li>Home</li>
<li>About</li>
<li>Services</li>
<li>Contact</li>
</ul>
</div>
CSS
#navigation_left ul
{
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
list-style-type: none;
}
#navigation_left ul li { display: inline; }
#navigation_left ul li a
{
font-family:"Helvetica Neue","Helvetica",Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif;
text-decoration: none;
padding: .2em 1em;
color: #DDD;
background-color: #0099CF;
border-radius: 4px;
}
#navigation_left ul li a:hover
{
color: #FFF;
background-color: #00BEF9;
}
2 Providing you want to center your li elements.
HTML
<div id="navigation_center">
<ul>
<li>Home</li>
<li>About</li>
<li>Services</li>
<li>Contact</li>
</ul>
</div>
CSS
#navigation_center ul
{
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
list-style-type: none;
text-align: center;
}
#navigation_center ul li { display: inline; }
#navigation_center ul li a
{
font-family:"Helvetica Neue","Helvetica",Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif;
text-decoration: none;
padding: .2em 1em;
color: #DDD;
background-color: #0099CF;
border-radius: 4px;
}
#navigation_center ul li a:hover
{
color: #FFF;
background-color: #00BEF9;
}
3 Providing you want to center your li elements with a solid background.
HTML
<div id="navigation_center_full">
<ul class="full">
<li>Home</li>
<li>About</li>
<li>Services</li>
<li>Contact</li>
</ul>
</div>
CSS
#navigation_center_full ul
{
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
list-style-type: none;
text-align: center;
padding: .2em 1em;
color: #DDD;
background-color: #0099CF;
}
#navigation_center_full ul li { display: inline; }
#navigation_center_full ul li a
{
font-family:"Helvetica Neue","Helvetica",Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif;
text-decoration: none;
padding: .2em 1em;
color: #DDD;
background-color: #0099CF;
border-radius: 4px;
}
#navigation_center_full ul li a:hover
{
color: #FFF;
background-color: #00BEF9;
}
Pretty sure this should help you.
Why you dont use <ul> and <li> tags? I think is better. Then in CSS you must use:
display: inline
