gwt-html5-database Alternative? - html

Resurrected an old project today and I see that gwt-html5-database has been taken off Maven. I see there is still an active project on GitHub (https://github.com/WSDOT/gwt-html5-database). Any recommended alternatives?

I ended up using JSNI and worked directly with WebSQL. IndexedDB is still too buggy.

Chromium Embedded Framework (CEF) html5 desktop application

I am new to Chromium Embedded Framework (CEF). How can I create an HTML5 desktop application using CEF. I serached a lot. But still confused about developing the applicaion.
please help.
You can create a CEF application in different languages (c/c++ or C#, python or ...), what is your preference about that?
In case of C# you might want to try https://github.com/cefsharp/CefSharp, I used this one in the past and it worked really great!
There are also sample projects in the CEF svn found here:
CefClient and CefSimple
Together with this tutorial here: https://bitbucket.org/chromiumembedded/cef/wiki/Tutorial
In the past I used CefSharp and one time I changed the CefClient example (removed everything I didn't need) and rebuild it. Using CefSharp was a lot simpler than the CefClient.
Another possibility might be https://github.com/rogerwang/node-webkit but that isn't CEF so a bit offtopic
edit:
For java there seem to be two CEF Wrappers
javachromiumembedded
javacef
See an example application here (code): javacef

Chrome extension development on Ubuntu is like a pain

I am developing my first extension for Chrome and as I am working on Ubuntu, I've encountered two awful bugs.
The first thing is that chrome.i18n.getUILanguage is not supported! (console gives me an error about unsupported method). The thing is that this problem is not listed on any WIKI page, which may become tricky for beginners. Anyone had similar issue? For now, I am using window.navigator.language.
The second bug is about rich notifications that are not supported (anyone knows when it will be released?). As far as I know, when the app will be about to send a notification, the scripts will stop due to the error (similar to the first bug). I am not sure if there is possibility to develop different packages for different platforms, but if I want my extension to be truly multi-platform, I will have to give up development of this feature.
Any suggestions or thoughts?
Thanks,
As i said earlier in a comment, it seems to be not supported with linux mint either where i'm developing the chrome extension.
In this link a member of the chrome team said that they submitted it... but this is not true.
Thanks for the window.navigator.language alternative.

How does the mozilla stub installer works?

I'm currently working on a no-touch deployment and auto-update mechanism for a Windows application. I've tried Microsoft ClickOnce strategy but it did not work for me as the strategy only suits small-sized apps, and my application hauls at ~500MB.
I'm interested in how the stub based installation and update strategies work for Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome and also Microsoft's packages including its .NET framework and VS installers. I've come across Google Omaha which hosts the Google product update deployment mechanism, but it is not very conclusive for me.
Can anybody please help me out how the stub-based deployment design works?
P.S. Any open source code for the same would be of a great help. ;-)
I'm not quite exactly sure of what you mean by "stub-based". There's a handful of technologies and tools involved in what I understand you want to accomplish. For the setup packages creation there are: NSIS, Inno Setup and the WiX Toolset, for example. A core technology is MSI. On the other hand, for application updates and the such, there's BITS and also some web stuff involved in updates publishing, like using an ATOM feed, for instance (your referenced Google Omaha might fit into this category).
It's only a bunch of pointers, but I hope it helps.
The Mozilla installer is opensource (as is the NSIS system it uses) so I'd suggest adapting the code found here: http://lxr.mozilla.org/seamonkey/source/toolkit/mozapps/installer/windows/nsis/
It's a bit complex so you could start with a simpler script and incorporate the bits you want (like finding/downloading updates and UAC evelation).

IE10 "__doPostBack is undefined" solutions do not work

I have a web server running Windows Server R2 Standard, and am experiencing the issue described in this blog post: http://www.hanselman.com/blog/BugAndFixASPNETFailsToDetectIE10CausingDoPostBackIsUndefinedJavaScriptErrorOrMaintainFF5ScrollbarPosition.aspx
In short, .Net is failing to recognise IE10 and is treating it as a downlevel browser without javascript support - if I understand the issue correctly.
I tried the following popular solutions:
Installed both hotfixes for .Net 2 and 4.
Manually updated the browser definition files in the .Net framework config folder and ran aspnet_regbrowsers.exe.
Put the new browser definition files in the App_Browsers directory.
Finally I upgraded to .Net 4.5 which solved the issue for .Net 4 sites running on the server, however .Net 2 sites are still experiencing the issue.
Because this is a live web server it has a lot of windows updates that have not been installed. I thought maybe there was an update that would address the issue. So I've taken a look at the updates but none of the descriptions seem to address the issue, so I cannot justify installing them and potentially causing more problems.
Does anyone have any other solutions or possible reasons why this issue just won't go away?
I have the same problem, and I haven't been able to figure out why none of the fixes work. However, I did find a workaround that might work for you: Setting the Page.ClientTarget attribute to "uplevel" overrides .NET's browser capability detection. Have a look at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.web.ui.page.clienttarget.aspx for more information.
Have come through many microsoft hot fixes, they were working in local environment, but in the live server there was no result.
Setting up Page.ClientTarget = "uplevel" (preferably in a header or footer page) has really solved the issue. I think this the best solution, as your .net application may not detect any other browser in future. But then we may have to wait and see, if this fix has any side effects.

android: how can i access NotificationCompat.Builder using android-support-v4-r6-googlemaps.jar?

In my app I use just one FragmentActivity and implement all other Functions as Fragments. The app should be compatible down to Android 1.6.
Due to the fact that I need a Mapview I implemented the android-support-v4-r6-googlemaps.jar, which works great.
Now I have to implement an alarmsystem with notifications, and then I got stuck. For notifications I seem to need the NotificationCompat.Builder, which is in android-support-v4.jar, but not in my support-library. I can't use both libraries in the same app, but I need at least the Notification package from the android-support-v4.jar. Can I extract this package somehow? Or is there any other solution?
I've been searching for a solution during a lot of hours, but I couldn't find any helpful.
Many thanks in advance for your help!
I've been having the same problem.
For now I'm just checking android versions, using deprecated approaches for older versions and suppressing the deprecation warnings.
Not a very clean way to handle it, but for now, it'll do.
