I have a site I need to create a subdomain for, managed by rackspace cloud.
The domain is already setup and online. I just need to copy the current www.mysite.com to lab.mysite.com.
How do I go about doing this?
Do I add the subdomain in the cloud sites listing, or under the listing for the domain?
And where do I copy the files to? The current site is at /www.mysite.com/web/content on the ftp.
Actually, there is much difference between Rackspace Cloud Sites and Rackspace Cloud Servers, and the ways to manage domains/subdomains are also different.
So, if you have a Cloud Sites account, that should be a part of the control panel.
But if you are on a Cloud Server, it's not the same thing :
Login to your NextGen admin panel choose your server, and open the DNS tab.
Here, you can add a record for your domain sub.domain.com to make it match your server's IP.
Then you'll have to tell Apache there's a new domain to deal with (a virtual host).
As an example, if you are running an Ubuntu Server, that should work something like that.
PS: There's also an official article in the Rackspace Knowledge Center, but i'm not a fan of the proposed solution.
When you login to the control panel at Rackspace, you can add subdomains by creating new sites like you would with a regular site. There's more information in the Cloud Sites Knowledge Base: Creating Sub-domains and/or Domain Aliases

I currently have a trial on my GoDaddy account. I created a tester domain and I'm trying to make my website entirely out of HTML (not with GoDaddy website builder). For some reason, it's only letting me add HTML code in certain places on website builder. How do I add HTML files using cpanel to my domain?
As you mentioned you are only trying to use html files, use any free shared website hosting service provider online (Some googling would work). Sign Up, login to the cpanel you will be prompted by the hosting service provider either by E-Mail or on the dashboard when you login the nameservers which are something like 'ns1.hostingprovider.com'.Login to your godaddy dashboard open your domain settings and update the nameservers with the ones your hosting provider gives you.Log on back to your hosting cpanel navigate to add files(html, css, a Readme file is optional) to your domain and wait Boom, and your files can go live within an hour of updating the nameservers on godaddy but sometimes this might take 24-48 hours.
Note - This process is only to know the general process to host files, if you consider hosting larger applications built in Multiple stacks and environments please check other threads when trying to deploy the application.
I'm not 100% sure if I'm on the correct section but i'll transfer the post once I know where it's supposed to be but I am looking for advice regarding web development, setting up a domain and hosting it.
I'm currently working on a personal project using Cloud9. Which is an online development environment where I can develop and host. The reason why I chose this is because it has MySQL usability as I retrieve and store data on the project I am working on.
I am now at the point where I want to get a domain and host a site to transfer my project over to a live website with my own domain which also has SQL/MySQL usability.
Any advice or where would be the best place to look up on methods of pursuing this?
Edit: I develop using PHP and JavaScript with MySQL
To start I would suggest heroku, they have a free option and some nice guides, depending on which server side language you use . This way you can get used to hosting some apps and doing deployments, seeing logs etc.
The database doesn't have to be on the same hosting necessarily, you can use mongolab for example.
For domain names it's a different thing, you will have to use the likes of godaddy
Why not setup your own VPS (Virtual Private Server)? There are many providers..
Design the software application with portability and avoid vendor lock-in to cloud services. For file transfer, there are FTP/FXP, zip/gzip, & version control standards like Git, CVS, SVN, etc. Use phpMyAdmin for the database export & import process to change web hosts. Otherwise, build a staging subdomain or a local development environment with copies of the original web app & use those to transfer files+DB to a new host for production.
i am planning to open a shared web hosting company. before opening i am configuring and checking that all things are up and running or not.
i had tried webmin, virtualmin and ajenti as web hosting manager on ubuntu server but i am not satisfied with them. is there any alternative to them which have secure administrator and client side control panel and easier to manager client account and hosts.
i am using apache2 as web server and mysql as database serve.
Thank You
Try ZPanel, it is cross-platform and has a great looking control panel. They also provide an installer which installs Apache, PHP, MySQL, and ZPanel, all pre-configured to run a shared hosting service.

Getting shared hosting right isn't an easy thing to do especially if you want to allow your clients to use scripting languages like PHP. By default, PHP runs under the same userid regardless of which of customer the files belong to. So they will be able to see the files (including config files with database passwords) of the other customers.
There are ways around this problem, but most of them are either inconvenient for the customer or they bring other problems (like having to run the Apache as root).
Besides the shared hosting market is quite full with existing companies which have huge data centers and therefore can offer much more service at lower costs.
So my suggestion would be: Look at new services that you can provide. Docker Hosting or LXC Hosting isn't that common yet and you can better compete there.
If you really want to do simple shared hosting, and are in search of an admin tool: Try ISPCONFIG3
I have created a website in HTML. And I use LAN in my hostel. Currently I am using xampp to run the site on localhost. Now I want to put my website online so that other guys using the hostel LAN could access it. How should I do it?
You should either find a machine with a static IP address and configure xampp and your firewall to work with the network. You can then share that IP address with your users.
If you need a domain name, you might want to google for some good hosting providers and upload your website there and configure it with your domain name.
I created a website using Code Ignitor and MySQL and want to upload everything to 000webhost.com
How do I:
upload my models, views and controllers to the public_html folder of 000webhost?
get my MySQL database up and running on 000webhost?
Thanks in advance
I am presuming that your control panel is cPanel. If thats the case then upload all your files in the web root of the server. Create a database, and change that details in database.php inside config folder. thats it, your site will be up and running.
Your .htaccess (at least mod_rewrite for codeigniter) will not work if you use the free 000webhost service (at least the last time i wanted it, the support told me that they doesn't support it... that was thy time i signed up for their free service for private test of scripts i wrote). Another thing is that for the free hosting they use their own control panel (not cPanel), cPanel is for the paid accounts.
Anyway they both offer ftp accounts, mysql databases and of course web ftp (online file manager). All you need is a ftp client (such as FileZilla or even Windows Explorer itself).
